Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

Advanced Vehicle Development is seeking an experienced Technical Project Manager to establish and operate a common work-management approach across program and project teams. This role will configure and administer Jira, develop work breakdown structure templates for different team types, facilitate effective Scrum execution, connect interdependent work across organizations, and create clear status views for executives, leaders, and delivery teams.

The successful candidate will help Advanced Vehicle Development improve execution visibility, cross-functional alignment, and delivery discipline while enabling teams to focus on the work required to advance vehicle architecture and technology development.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Establish and maintain Jira as a work-management solution for Advanced Vehicle Development program and project teams.
  • Define Jira workflows, issue types, fields, permissions, naming conventions, and operating guidelines that support consistent execution and reporting.
  • Create reusable work breakdown structure templates for different Advanced Vehicle Development team types, including program teams and technical project teams.
    • Translate program milestones and deliverables into appropriately structured epics, features, tasks, dependencies, and actionable work items.
  • Plan, facilitate, and continuously improve Scrum events, including planning, daily coordination, reviews, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
    • Customize Scrum cadences, ceremonies, workflows, and reporting practices to fit the needs of specific team types while maintaining common program-level standards.
    • Partner with Scrum Managers, project managers, technical leads, and portfolio stakeholders across other organizations to connect related projects, dependencies, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Establish and maintain mechanisms for identifying, tracking, escalating, and resolving cross-organizational risks, issues, decisions, and dependencies.
    • Create and maintain multiple Jira dashboards and status views that provide the right level of information for each audience:
      • Executive View – overall health, major milestones, critical risks, decisions, and delivery confidence.
      • Leadership View – program progress, cross-team dependencies, capacity concerns, risks, and upcoming commitments.
      • Team View – backlog health, sprint progress, impediments, assigned work, and near-term priorities.
    • Define standard status metrics and reporting practices so that project information is timely, consistent, and decision-ready.
  • Coach teams on practical work-management, backlog-management, estimation, prioritization, and status-reporting practices.
  • Monitor adoption of the Advanced Vehicle Development work-management approach and identify opportunities to simplify processes and improve execution efficiency.
    • Develop concise leadership communications, operating reviews, training materials, and user guidance for Jira and related delivery practices.
    • Work with information technology and enterprise tool teams to address Jira integrations, access, data quality, automation, and reporting needs.
  • Protect confidential company information and follow applicable General Motors policies and procedures.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, information systems, project management, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 2+ years of experience in technical project management, program management, engineering operations, product development, or a related delivery environment.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing complex, cross-functional work into actionable plans, milestones, deliverables, and dependencies.
  • Experience facilitating project execution across multiple teams or organizations without direct authority.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, facilitation, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to convert complex technical and organizational information into clear status, decisions, actions, and executive-level recommendations.
  • Strong analytical, planning, prioritization, problem-solving, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adapt to changing program needs.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience configuring, administering, or scaling Jira or a comparable work-management platform.
  • Experience with Scrum, Agile, Kanban, or other iterative delivery methods.
  • Experience creating work breakdown structures, delivery templates, project taxonomies, or portfolio-management standards.
  • Experience designing executive, leadership, and team dashboards using Jira or business-intelligence/reporting tools.
  • Experience connecting dependencies and integrated schedules across engineering, software, product, information technology, or other technical organizations.
  • Experience supporting vehicle development, advanced engineering, systems engineering, model-based systems engineering, or other complex product-development environments.
  • Jira, Scrum, Agile, or project-management certification.
  • Experience with workflow automation, dashboard design, data quality, or tool integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaboration, influence adoption, and foster a culture of transparency and accountability.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, continuous-improvement mindset, and ability to champion change.
