Lumen is the trusted network for the AI‑powered world, connecting people, data, and applications through our expansive fiber network and connected ecosystem. We enable secure, high‑performance connectivity across cloud, edge, and AI workloads for enterprises, governments, and communities.

At Lumen, you’ll work on infrastructure customers rely on today and build for what’s next, where performance, security, and resilience matter.

This is a high accountability environment where bold ideas drive real innovation for our customers, partners, and industry. The work is challenging, expectations are clear, and trust is built into how we operate. If you’re ready to take ownership, deliver meaningful impact, and help shape the future of AI‑ready connectivity, join us today.

The Role

The API Technology Architect is a customer-facing technical specialist within Lumen’s Solutions With Advanced Technology (SWAT) Team. This role helps customers and Technical Sellers successfully use Lumen APIs to automate service ordering, provisioning, modification, management, and integration with customer and partner systems.

The API Technology Architect combines hands-on API architecture and integration expertise with technical seller enablement, documentation, training, field support, and product advocacy. The successful candidate will lead API-focused discovery and technical consultations, guide integration designs, help troubleshoot complex customer scenarios, and translate business requirements into secure, supportable, and reusable API-driven solutions.

The Main Responsibilities

API Architecture and Customer Integration

  • Lead technical discovery with customers and account teams to understand business objectives, automation goals, systems, workflows, security requirements, operational constraints, and measures of success.
  • Architect and document customer integration patterns, including system context, API dependencies, request and response flows, authentication, and operational support considerations.

Cross-Portfolio Technology Expertise

  • Collaborate with the appropriate Technology Architects and domain specialists when customer requirements cross product or organizational boundaries.
  • Help account teams form a coherent API and automation strategy across multiple Lumen products rather than treating each product integration as an isolated activity.

Customer and Technical Seller Engagement

  • Lead or participate in customer workshops, architecture discussions, technical demonstrations, integration reviews, troubleshooting sessions, and onboarding calls.
  • Serve as an escalation and consultation resource for Technical Sellers who need specialized API knowledge for complex or multi-product opportunities.

Documentation, Training, and Knowledge Transfer

  • Create and maintain practical API enablement resources, including design guides, reference architectures, integration patterns, quick-reference materials, example workflows, and FAQs.
  • Partner with Product Management, API Platforms, development teams, and documentation owners to improve the usability, consistency, technical accuracy, and discoverability of API resources.
  • Develop and deliver engaging API education for Technical Sellers and other internal stakeholders through live sessions, recorded demonstrations, short-form instructional videos, technical discussions, office hours, and deeper architecture workshops.

Success Measures:

  • Customers and Technical Sellers being better equipped to evaluate, design, and implement supportable API-driven solutions.
  • High-quality, reusable API architecture and enablement assets that reduce repeated discovery and make field engagements more consistent.
  • Measurable progress in API adoption, documentation effectiveness, training usefulness, and customer or field experience where the necessary data is available.

What We Look For in a Candidate

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Telecommunications, or a related field, or equivalent relevant education and professional experience.
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: technical pre-sales, solution architecture, API or integration architecture, software or platform consulting, network automation, or telecommunications engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical discovery and translating customer business and technical requirements into clear, supportable solution designs.
  • Working knowledge of API authentication and authorization concepts, including OAuth 2.0, tokens, credentials, scopes, and secure handling of secrets.
  • Strong written, verbal, listening, presentation, and facilitation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with developers, engineers, architects, sales teams, product teams, operations teams, and business leaders.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple customer engagements, enablement deliverables, and competing priorities.

Work Environment

  • This is a customer-facing role that may require participation in customer meetings, workshops, industry events, or internal collaboration sessions outside the employee’s primary work location.
  • Some travel may be required based on customer and business needs.
