AECOM is seeking a Traffic & Intelligent Transportation System Manager to join our Transportation team in Indianapolis, Indiana. In this role, you will lead traffic engineering and intelligent transportation systems projects that improve roadway safety, mobility, operational efficiency, and the overall transportation experience for the communities we serve. You will combine technical expertise with project management and team leadership to deliver innovative, data-driven solutions for public-sector transportation agencies and other clients.

Working across traffic engineering, transportation planning, roadway design, and emerging technologies, you will lead project development and delivery while helping clients address complex transportation challenges. Your work may include traffic operations and simulation, safety assessments, traffic control and staging, ITS design, and the integration of technologies that support real-time traffic monitoring, incident management, and traveler information. You will also mentor early-career professionals, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, maintain strong client relationships, and contribute to business development opportunities that expand AECOM’s transportation practice.

At AECOM, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a global network of transportation professionals and apply your technical and leadership skills to projects that help create safer, more connected, and more resilient transportation systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage traffic engineering and ITS projects from planning and preliminary design through final design and project delivery, ensuring work is completed in accordance with scope, schedule, budget, and AECOM quality standards.
  • Lead traffic engineering studies, including traffic operations analyses, traffic forecasting, intersection and corridor evaluations, capacity assessments, and traffic simulation.
  • Direct and support roadway safety studies, operational assessments, and the development of practical recommendations to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance roadway safety.
  • Lead or support the planning, design, and implementation of ITS improvements, including traffic monitoring and detection systems, communications infrastructure, dynamic message signs, closed-circuit television systems, and other traffic management technologies, as appropriate to project needs.
  • Oversee the development of traffic control plans, maintenance-of-traffic strategies, construction staging plans, signal and signing plans, ITS layouts, specifications, engineer’s estimates, technical memoranda, and reports.
  • Apply the systems engineering process to ITS projects, including the evaluation of stakeholder needs, development of system requirements, consideration of alternatives, and coordination of system integration and implementation.
  • Coordinate project activities with transportation agencies, municipalities, metropolitan planning organizations, contractors, utility providers, and other stakeholders to advance project objectives and resolve technical issues.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable agency requirements, design standards, technical specifications, and quality management procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance, review calculations and design documents, and oversee the work of engineers, technicians, and early-career professionals to support high-quality project delivery and professional development.
  • Manage project resources, monitor financial performance, identify project risks, and proactively address scope, schedule, budget, and quality issues.
  • Collaborate with roadway, civil, electrical, structural, planning, and construction professionals to develop integrated transportation solutions.
  • Support client relationship management, proposal development, technical presentations, and business development initiatives to identify opportunities and strengthen AECOM’s transportation market presence.
  • Stay current with traffic engineering practices, ITS technologies, transportation safety initiatives, and emerging mobility solutions to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Indiana, or the ability to obtain Indiana PE licensure within six months.
  • Demonstrated experience managing traffic engineering or ITS projects, including technical delivery, staff coordination, client communication, and management of project scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Experience delivering transportation projects for state departments of transportation, local public agencies, toll authorities, or other public-sector transportation clients, with familiarity with INDOT standards, design requirements, and project development and submittal processes strongly preferred.
  • Experience preparing, reviewing, and coordinating traffic engineering deliverables, including traffic control plans, maintenance-of-traffic plans, traffic signal and signing plans, ITS design plans, specifications, and engineer’s estimates.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation and applicable transportation design platforms, along with experience using traffic analysis and simulation software such as Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, or comparable tools.
