What you’ll be doing...

As the Transport Engineering Director, you will provide strategic executive leadership and operational oversight for the Interoffice Facilities (IOF) Metro Transport engineering organization. You will direct the engineering planning, architecture, capacity management, design, and provisioning of Verizon’s next-generation Intelligent Edge Network (iEN) and legacy metro transport infrastructures across designated metro regions. In this role, you will lead a high-performing, multi-tiered engineering workforce, steward multi-million dollar capital and operational expenditure budgets, accelerate legacy modernization and site decommission programs, and champion digital transformation through automation and AI enablement.

  • Directing end-to-end transport engineering operations across regional IOF metro networks, overseeing both Center and Field Engineering disciplines.
  • Leading strategic planning for interoffice transport facilities, ensuring optimal capacity management, route diversity, and rapid inventory creation across all metro markets.
  • Driving an "iEN-first" architectural strategy while safeguarding network reliability and service continuity across legacy (VzB, VzT, VzW, VzF) and next-generation platforms.
  • Championing regional legacy migration initiatives, including Access Unification (AU), TDM-to-IP grooms, circuit disconnects, and equipment power-down programs to yield multi-million dollar annual expense reductions.
  • Overseeing technical facility real estate exit and compression strategies (e.g., central office consolidation, non-directional facility rationalization), balancing corporate asset value against uninterrupted customer delivery.
  • Mitigating supply chain and legacy hardware risks (such as vendor manufacture-discontinue notices) by establishing forward-looking replacement and modernization roadmaps.
  • Overseeing substantial annual CAPEX and OPEX allocations, driving disciplined capital deployment, accurate run-rate forecasting, and unit-cost reduction across transport programs.
  • Ensuring predictable delivery of large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure projects supporting 5G optimization, Switched Ethernet Services (SES), Ultra Long Haul (ULH) offloads, NG-PON2, and major enterprise/public events.
  • Sponsoring and directing the implementation of AI, automation, and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) bot tools across manual engineering, provisioning, and inventory workflows.
  • Partnering with IT and systems teams on Next-Gen OSS integration, driving adoption of tools such as ICON, Nautilus, COFFEE, ACTP, and modern data visualization dashboards.
  • Fostering seamless partnerships with Fiber Access Engineering, Field and Center Operations, Construction, Network Facility Optimization & Decommissioning, Network Planning, Decom PMO and NMC.
  • Managing strategic technical relationships with key network equipment manufacturers (including Ciena, Cisco, Fujitsu, and Nokia) to steer product roadmaps and resolve escalations.
  • Leading, mentoring, and inspiring a diverse team of senior managers, engineers, and technical professionals across geographically dispersed markets.
  • Championing talent incubation programs, succession planning, technical upskilling, and culture.
  • Fostering constructive labor relations and maintain positive collaboration with associate teams within collective bargaining agreement (CBA) guidelines where applicable.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Ten or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training.
  • Proven leadership experience directing larger, geographically distributed engineering or network operations teams.
  • Deep technical expertise in Interoffice Facilities (IOF), Metro Transport architectures, optical transport systems (DWDM/ROADM), Ethernet/IP switching, and legacy transport topologies.
  • Proven track record leading large-scale network decommissioning, central office site compression, and real estate exit programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate complex technical strategies and operational metrics to executive leadership.
  • Willingness to travel up to approximately 25% of the time.

Even better if you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or related technical field.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Telecommunications, or an MBA.
  • In-depth knowledge of Verizon's Intelligent Edge Network (iEN) architecture, planning, build, and migration methodologies.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen with experience managing multi-million dollar CAPEX and OPEX budgets.
  • Understanding of Verizon Telecom, Verizon Business, Verizon Wireless, and Verizon Frontier Optical Transport Networks.
  • Ten or more years of progressive engineering leadership within a Tier-1 telecommunications service provider.
  • Familiarity with optical and IP transport hardware platforms (Ciena, Cisco, Fujitsu, Nokia, Juniper).
  • Demonstrated experience with core transport inventory, provisioning, and circuit management systems (such as TIRKS, ICON, Nautilus, FIM, COFFEE, TCOMS, CND, or equivalent OSS platforms).
  • Track record of championing automation, generative AI tools, and data analytics to streamline engineering workflows and creating efficiencies.
  • Experience navigating union/associate workforces and operating under collective bargaining agreements.

If Verizon and this role sound like a fit for you, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every “even better” qualification listed above.
