We’re looking for an Underwriter to support new business underwriting for our small group level-funded product. This role is critical to balancing profitable growth with competitive, compelling offers to prospects. You’ll be at the intersection of underwriting strategy and sales execution—collaborating closely with our sales, actuarial, and product teams to evaluate risk, price appropriately, and push the boundaries of what’s possible in small group underwriting. What you will do: Evaluate employer group risk and determine appropriate pricing for level-funded plans Collaborate with Sales to craft competitive proposals and win business without compromising profitability Analyze risk factors and make informed, data-driven decisions—balancing risk tolerance with growth goals Help design and refine underwriting guidelines, processes, and tools as we scale Partner cross-functionally with Product, Actuarial, and Customer Success to continuously improve the end-to-end experience Monitor underwriting outcomes and market dynamics to inform ongoing pricing and risk strategies About you: 3+ years of underwriting experience, ideally with a focus on small groups and/or level-funded products Strong understanding of health insurance pricing, risk assessment, and underwriting guidelines Comfortable taking calculated risks to support business goals, especially in a fast-evolving startup environment Excellent communicator with the ability to explain underwriting decisions to non-technical stakeholders Highly collaborative and proactive—able to build strong working relationships across Sales, Actuarial, and beyond Thrives in ambiguity and brings a continuous improvement mindset to their work Experience working at an insurtech, carrier, or TPA focused on the small group market Familiarity with underwriting automation tools or systems Strong data analysis skills (Excel, etc.) Benefits: Remote company with a fully distributed team – no return-to-office mandates Flexible vacation policy (and a culture of using it) Medical, dental, and vision insurance with 100% company-paid employee coverage 401(k) with company match, FSA, and HSA plans Paid parental leave Short and long-term disability, as well as life insurance Competitive stock options are offered to all employees Transparent compensation & formal career development programs Paid one-month sabbatical after 5 years Stipends for setting up your home office and an ongoing learning budget Direct positive impact on members’ lives – wait until you see the positive feedback members share every day About Sana Founded in 2017, Sana is a health plan solution built for small and midsize businesses — designed around our integrated primary care service, Sana Care.
