Brown & Brown is seeking an Underwriting Associate to join our growing team in Sparks, MD. 

 

As an Underwriting Associate at Oxford Risk Management Group, you will support the evaluation and servicing of Commercial Casualty and Enterprise Risk Management accounts. This position works closely with Underwriters and other departments to analyze account information, prepare underwriting materials, coordinate account activity, and maintain accurate and complete underwriting documentation.

How You Will Contribute: 

  • Supports Underwriters throughout the new business and renewal processes, including organizing documents, identifying missing information, preparing files for review, and tracking outstanding requirements.
  • Applies working knowledge of Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, and Excess Liability coverage when reviewing submissions, preparing account materials, and responding to internal questions.
  • Reviews loss runs to identify loss frequency, severity, trends, open claims, and other matters requiring further underwriting review.
  • Prepares underwriting summaries, account worksheets, exposure analyses, and other materials to support underwriting evaluation and decision-making.
  • Processes underwriting documents and takes appropriate action within established authority, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Serves as a liaison between Underwriters and other Oxford departments, providing timely and accurate underwriting information needed to bind, issue, endorse, renew, or cancel accounts and address certificates, inspections, and other account-related matters.
  • Drafts account-related correspondence and communicates with internal business partners, brokers, or other parties in the Underwriter’s direction.
  • Monitors account activity and follow up on outstanding underwriting information, subjectivities, inspections, recommendations, and other requirements.
  • Maintains complete, accurate, and well-organized underwriting files in accordance with departmental standards and documentation requirements.

Skills & Experience to be Successful:

  • Bachelor’s degree or one to three years of relevant Property and Casualty insurance experience; an equivalent combination of education, training, and industry experience may be considered.
  • Familiarity with Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, and Excess Liability coverage is preferred.
  • Ability to review and interpret commercial insurance policies, applications, endorsements, exposure information, and loss of runs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify incomplete or inconsistent information and determine when additional underwriting review is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, manage multiple deadlines, and produce accurate work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining complete and accurate underwriting documentation.
  • Customer-service mindset with the ability to communicate promptly, professionally, and effectively with Underwriters, internal departments, brokers, clients, and other business partners.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals across different functions and levels of the organization.
  • Ability to balance internal service standards with broker and client expectations while appropriately escalating issues requiring underwriting judgment or authority.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, exercise sound judgment within established guidelines, and seek direction when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated initiative, reliability, accountability, and commitment to meeting established deadlines and work-quality standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel, and the ability to learn underwriting and policy management systems.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and develop increasing technical knowledge and responsibility over time.

Pay Range

$36.06 - $36.06 Hourly

The pay range provided above is made in good faith and based on our lowest and highest annual salary or hourly rate paid for the role and takes into account years of experience required, geography, and/or budget for the role.
