Overview

Serves as a subject matter expert for underwriting practices, supporting the LOB Practices Manager and VP, Casualty / Property Underwriting Practices in executing the technical and analytical functions. Assists and at times take the lead in the development, maintenance, and documentation of underwriting guidelines, authority frameworks, and LOB-specific training content. Conducts research and analysis on coverages, trends, and exposures to support guideline recommendations and portfolio performance improvement. Handles underwriting referrals within assigned authority if needed, supports vendor and tool deployment activities, and contributes to Quality Assurance and Large Loss Review processes. Acts as a technical resource for regional underwriting staff, and supports Segment Managers in strengthening their technical acumen. Develops proficient knowledge of products, coverages, and underwriting requirements through hands-on analytical work and collaboration with the broader Practices team. Serves as a consultative resource on operational and regulatory compliance topics and supports vendor and tool deployment for the line of business

Responsibilities

  • Guideline Creation: Assists the LOB Practices Manager in developing, documenting, and maintaining underwriting guidelines. Researches coverage questions, analyzes forms and underwriting requirements, and drafts guideline updates for review. Tracks guideline changes and ensures documentation is current and accessible.
  • Authority Framework Support: Supports the documentation and maintenance of the authority delegation framework. Monitors authority utilization, identifies areas where authority levels may need adjustment, and provides analysis and recommendations to ensure authority structures appropriately balance profitable growth with risk controls.
  • Curriculum & Training Content Support: Creates LOB-specific training curricula and technical content. Works with the LOB Practices Manager and Underwriting Learning & Enablement team to develop educational materials that ensure regional personnel and SBUs have a thorough understanding of underwriting guidelines, issues, and controls.
  • Underwriting Referrals: Receives and handles underwriting referrals from the Market Segments team, utilizing developing expertise to advise a solution or course of action in a timely manner. Provides authoritative guidance on large, unique, and complex accounts in support of Corporate UW peers. Works within LOA and confers with the LOB Practices Manager for unusual or complex circumstances.
  • Portfolio Analysis & Trend Identification: Supports UW Practices Manager and VP with the ownership of the profit and loss performance. In conjunction with the UW Practices Manager, provides analysis for countrywide and state-level reviews as needed, identifies positive and negative trends, and works with Underwriting Strategy & regional partners on profitability improvement and profitable production strategies. Actively identifies areas that present opportunity for focus Reviews.
  • Coverage Research & Analysis: Develops proficient knowledge of products and coverages by analyzing forms, applications, guidelines, and underwriting requirements. Collaborates with the team to understand how coverage applies by analyzing claims activity compared to underwriting practices. Identifies emerging exposures and coverage issues for escalation.
  • Vendor & Tool Support: Supports the deployment and ongoing management of LOB-specific vendor tools and resources. Assists/takes the lead in evaluating tool effectiveness, documenting workflows, and coordinating with Underwriting Learning & Enablement team on tool-related communication needs.
  • Compliance Support: Supports the LOB Practices Manager when consulted on operational and regulatory compliance topics. Gathers information, conducts research, and prepares analysis to support compliance-related discussions.
  • Quality Assurance & Large Loss Reviews: Participates in the Quality Assurance review process and Large Loss Reviews as necessary. Works independently in drafting analysis, documenting findings, and tracking action items.
  • Stakeholder Support: Provides exceptional customer service to agents, regional personnel, SBUs, and other stakeholders. Supports the LOB Practices Manager and VP in managing analytical projects and cross-functional initiatives.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Demonstrates underwriting expertise and knowledge of LOB-specific coverages, exposures, and underwriting guidelines, including the ability to develop, interpret, and apply underwriting standards.

  • Effectively balances strategic thinking with attention to detail, using data, sound judgment, and diverse perspectives to solve problems and make informed decisions.
  • Builds productive relationships with internal and external partners while managing multiple priorities and work flows to meet service and productions goals.
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills. Adapts effectively to change and is proficient in the use of underwriting, desktop, and communication tools.

Education and Experience

•College degree preferred•5+ years Underwriting, Claims, Loss Control, or other insurance-related experience•3+ years specific line of business experience preferred•3+ years Risk Management, Reinsurance, Field Underwriting, or Agency Experience preferred

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.

Pay Range

USD $96,000.00 - USD $160,000.00 /Yr.
