About University Architect/Campus Planning and Design

As caretakers of a legacy, the University Architect/Campus Planning and Design office (UA/CPD) - a department within Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) - leads an integrated approach of strategic planning and design excellence to support a campus environment consistent with Stanford's status as one of the leading academic/research institutions in the world. UA/CPD is charged with leading the university annual capital plan process, developing long range campus framework strategies, planning and siting new buildings, developing and applying site/architecture guidelines for the design of new buildings and landscape, and advocating responsible stewardship of the land through sustainable design.

About the role

The University Landscape Architect partners with the University Architect to establish a clear campus planning framework, leads a team of planners and landscape architects to provide direction on landscape design for significant capital projects, collaborates with team members to develop the Stanford Infrastructure Program for campus connective elements (SIP-C), and leads efforts to develop vibrant campus places that support the culture of the Stanford community. The University Landscape Architect works with architects, consultants, and university colleagues in Grounds & Maintenance, Sustainability, Transportation, Utilities and Water, Athletics & Recreation, Housing, and all of the academic schools and units to advocate for placemaking that supports the university mission. The University Landscape Architect develops conceptual designs for specific campus improvements including landscape plantings, tree relocation, malls, courtyards, plazas, outdoor lighting, art, and travel routes and parking for vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians.

Core Duties:

  • Manage professional planning staff by evaluating staffing needs, assigning work, evaluating performance, facilitating the review process, and providing training and development.

  • Represent the university on projects to convey university planning and design objectives, context, and spatial and aesthetic directions to Stanford entities, local communities, and their planning-related staffs.

  • Oversee land use, institutional space planning, and university and community design projects involving Stanford facilities or lands.

  • Provide design and review oversight for specific university improvement projects. Liaison among the school/unit, LBRE, and/or SHC on planning. Strategizes for multiple spaces at one time, which may include both on- and off-campus spaces.

  • Develop written reports and recommendations, and make presentations of various planning and development initiatives for senior administration, public officials, trustees, donors, and the public at large.

  • Interpret and promote academic land use and planning objectives in relationship to Stanford's commercial and infrastructure development.

  • Evaluate Stanford's planning and development activities for regulatory compliance and related local environmental and social impacts.

  • Assist in the selection of design, planning, and other technical consultants and monitor their performance.

Minimum Education:

Advanced degree in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, or other appropriate specialty.

Minimum Experience:

Ten plus years of professional experience including managerial experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.

  • Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate large, complex projects.

  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving ability.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative internal and external relationships.

  • Ability to apply current industry knowledge and technical advances to jobs.

  • Verbal, graphic, and oral communication skills to explain design.

  • Experience working with varied client groups, government officials, and regulatory agencies.

Certificates and Licenses Required

Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License.
