UX UI Designer
Job Type: Full time
Location: Remote
Working Hours: UK time zone
The Opportunity
An early stage fintech is looking for an experienced UX UI Designer to join its Product team and take ownership of the user experience across its lending platform.
The business is rebuilding UK property lending infrastructure, starting with bridging finance and expanding into specialist term loans. Its platform connects lenders, capital providers, brokers and borrowers, with a focus on automation, auditability and real time visibility.
This is a hands on design and development role combining end to end product design, design system ownership and front end engineering. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape a technically complex product from an early stage, working closely with product and engineering teams to turn complex financial workflows into intuitive, accessible interfaces.
You will own the user experience from the first broker submission through underwriting, credit decisioning, funding and servicing. You will analyse complex lending workflows, identify what users actually need, design solutions and help ship them.
You will also own the design system, the patterns engineers build with and the standard of craft every new screen is measured against.
This is not simply a role where you hand over Figma files to developers. The business is looking for a genuinely strong designer who also writes code, whether you have previously worked as a front end developer before moving into design or have always worked across both disciplines.
You will prototype in code when it is the fastest way to answer a question, contribute to the component library in TypeScript and close the gap between design intent and what reaches production.
Key Responsibilities:
End to end product design
• Own the complete product experience, creating user flows, wireframes and reliable prototypes that turn complex lending processes into clear, intuitive interfaces.
• Analyse business requirements and user needs, identifying the right solutions while maintaining a focus on usability, clarity and simplicity.
• Design data dense, high stakes interfaces, including dashboards, pipelines, tables, forms and document workflows that support financial decision making.
Design systems and front end development
• Build and maintain the design system, defining tokens, components and patterns in Figma while keeping them aligned with the coded component library using TypeScript and Storybook.
• Maintain a single source of truth between design and code, ensuring consistency across the platform.
• Prototype in code rather than relying solely on Figma. Build interactive, data driven prototypes, including those developed with AI assisted tools, to test ideas against real numbers and edge cases before engineering commits.
• Contribute directly to the front end by pairing with engineers, raising pull requests for UI improvements, components and styling, and reviewing changes to ensure the finished product matches the intended design.
Accessibility and user research
• Build accessibility into the design and development process, working towards consistent standards such as WCAG 2.2 AA.
• Collaborate with QA on automated accessibility testing and visual regression checks.
• Conduct usability testing and journey mapping with client teams where appropriate, translating findings into actionable improvements.
• Use product analytics, user feedback and business metrics to continuously refine the platform.
Collaboration and ownership
• Present and defend design decisions, communicating concepts, research findings and trade offs clearly to founders, engineers and commercial stakeholders.
• Maintain design principles, component usage guidelines and decision records to ensure design knowledge is documented and accessible.
• Work closely with product and engineering teams in an agile environment, taking ownership of design decisions and helping drive work through to production.
Requirements
Product Design Experience
• 4+ years of commercial experience in UX UI or product design for digital products.
• A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful solutions to genuinely complex problems, rather than simply polished visuals.
• Expert knowledge of Figma, including components, variants, auto layout, variables, tokens and Dev Mode. Experience with Sketch, Adobe XD or similar tools is also relevant.
• Experience building or maintaining a design system, ideally with design tokens mapped through to code using Storybook or an equivalent tool.
• Proven experience analysing complex business requirements within a finance or technology environment and translating them into accessible, well structured interfaces.
• Experience planning and conducting user interviews and usability tests, then synthesising findings into actionable insights.
Technical Skills
• Hands on development experience, either through a previous front end or full stack development role or sustained hybrid design and engineering work.
• Ability to read and write production quality HTML, CSS and TypeScript or JavaScript.
• Experience with modern front end frameworks, preferably React or an equivalent, with a solid understanding of component driven development, state, props and responsive layouts.
• Familiarity with Git and branch based workflows, with code review forming a normal part of the working process.
• Strong numerical aptitude and the ability to understand mathematical and financial concepts, translating them into accurate and intuitive user interfaces.
• Working knowledge of WCAG 2.2 and inclusive design practices.
Industry and Working Environment
• Experience in lending, banking, fintech or the wider technology sector is desirable.
• Experience working in a fast paced, technology driven startup, from early stage through to startup or midsize growth.
• Comfortable working in an early stage environment where requirements may be ambiguous and structure needs to be created.
• Understanding of Kanban and Scrum, with experience working in agile environments and rapid iteration cycles using tools such as Jira.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions clearly, both verbally and in writing. Much of the team's coordination takes place asynchronously.
• Able to work UK time zone hours, aligned with GMT.
• Comfortable making firm decisions while remaining empathetic and respectful.
• Takes full ownership, works independently and brings the wider team along.
• A degree in a relevant subject is essential.
Desirable Experience
• Design engineering or front end infrastructure experience, including Tailwind or CSS in JS, design token pipelines such as Style Dictionary, Figma Code Connect and Storybook interaction testing.
• Experience using AI assisted design and development tools such as Claude, Cursor or Figma Make to accelerate prototyping and coding, with good judgement about where these tools add value.
• Fintech, lending or payments experience, including regulated workflows, money movement, audit requirements and awareness of compliance frameworks such as FCA Consumer Duty, GDPR and ISO 27001.
• Data visualisation experience, designing and building clear, accurate charts and dashboards for financial data.
• Motion and micro interaction design that supports comprehension rather than decoration.
• Accessibility testing experience, including visual regression testing with tools such as Playwright screenshot comparison.
• Project management skills, including planning, prioritising and coordinating design work across multiple stakeholders.
• Blockchain or early stage blockchain project experience.
• Open source contributions, a public design system or personal projects that you have designed and built yourself.
Technology Stack
Design: Figma, including components, variables and Dev Mode.
Language and Runtime: TypeScript, Node.js 22.
Front End: React component library documented in Storybook.
Testing: Playwright for end to end and visual regression testing.
Authentication: Keycloak and OIDC.
Infrastructure: Docker and GKE.
Continuous Integration: GitHub Actions with environment promotion gates.
Documentation: Architecture Decision Records, design guidelines and a maintained engineering knowledge base.
What the Opportunity Offers
• Full ownership of the product design process and design system.
• The opportunity to influence product direction and shape a platform from an early stage.
• Close collaboration with product, engineering, founders and commercial stakeholders.
• A technically challenging role at the intersection of fintech, product design and front end development.
• The opportunity to make design thinking and systems modelling central to product development.
