VDC Operations Manager
Fully Remote
The VDC Operations Manager will lead the operational and people-management functions supporting a growing BIM/VDC organization. This position oversees project workflows, team capacity, client escalations, process development, and the ongoing coaching and development of BIM/VDC coordinators.
The role requires a combination of construction/AEC project management experience, hands-on BIM/VDC knowledge, and proven people leadership. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between technical project issues, team development, client communication, and operational planning.
This is a fully remote leadership position with significant opportunity to develop processes, systems, and team structure as the organization grows.
VDC Operations Manager Key Responsibilities
- Oversee project and contract-management processes across the BIM/VDC portfolio.
- Monitor project schedules, RFIs, submittals, change orders, and document control.
- Manage, coach, and develop BIM/VDC coordinators through regular one-on-one meetings, feedback, training, and individual development plans.
- Provide technical and operational support when team members encounter complex coordination issues.
- Monitor team workload, project assignments, and capacity to identify resource needs before they affect project performance.
- Partner with technical quality leadership to align project processes with BIM/VDC standards.
- Serve as an escalation point for clients and general contractors regarding schedule, scope, coordination, and process issues.
- Coordinate with estimating and project leadership on scope, pricing, budget, and drawing-related questions.
- Monitor project changes and help ensure contractual changes are properly documented and communicated.
- Develop and improve operational systems for project tracking, reporting, onboarding, resource planning, and team performance.
- Establish consistent workflows across MEP and structural VDC projects.
- Identify recurring operational problems and develop sustainable solutions rather than relying on short-term fixes.
- Support recruiting, onboarding, training, and long-term development of the VDC team.
- Promote effective communication, accountability, quality, and collaboration across a distributed team.
- Maintain appropriate cybersecurity and data-protection practices for client information and project files.
Required Qualifications for VDC Operations Manager
- Previous experience directly managing and developing employees.
- Demonstrated experience conducting one-on-one meetings, providing performance feedback, and creating employee development plans.
- Experience managing construction, design, or AEC project workflows involving schedules, RFIs, submittals, change orders, and project documentation.
- Professional background in BIM/VDC coordination or a closely related AEC, MEP, or construction discipline.
- Strong hands-on experience with BIM/VDC processes, including clash detection, drawing production, RFIs, and submittals.
- Working proficiency with Revit, Autodesk Fabrication CADmep, Navisworks, and Autodesk Construction Cloud or similar platforms.
- Ability to understand technical coordination issues well enough to review work, coach team members, and participate in problem-solving.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable managing client and general contractor escalations.
- Ability to provide direct, constructive feedback and hold team members accountable.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Sound judgment regarding cybersecurity and protection of confidential project information.
- Authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications for VDC Operations Manager
- Experience working for or closely with specialty subcontractors or trade contractors.
- Experience developing new processes, systems, or workflows within a growing organization.
- Experience managing remote or geographically distributed teams.
- Experience across multiple VDC disciplines, including MEP and structural coordination.
- Experience supporting organizational growth, recruiting, or team expansion.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a technically credible BIM/VDC professional who has successfully transitioned into people and operational leadership. They can coach a coordinator through a technical problem, identify a process weakness across multiple projects, communicate effectively with a client or GC, and make practical decisions about staffing and workload.
This person should be comfortable building structure where it does not yet exist and developing both people and processes as the organization grows.
