We are committed to creating meaningful social, environmental, and economic change in our communities.
Department Overview
Walker & Dunlop’s Enterprise Risk Management team is responsible for identifying, assessing, and reporting on risk while assisting management in its risk mitigation efforts. By helping the Company proactively manage risk, the Enterprise Risk Management team plays a crucial role in safeguarding the organization's assets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting strategic decision-making.
The Impact You Will Have
We are seeking an experienced Vice President, Deputy GSE Compliance Officer to help establish, implement, and manage a comprehensive, enterprise-wide Government-Sponsored Enterprise (GSE) Compliance Program. Reporting to the Chief Risk and GSE Compliance Officer, this individual will play a key role in developing the governance, policies, processes, and oversight mechanisms necessary to support compliance with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac requirements.
This individual will lead key components of the compliance framework, including GSE obligations management, compliance risk assessments, monitoring and testing, issue management, and reporting. Working closely with business and functional leaders, the Deputy GSE Compliance Officer will help strengthen internal controls, establish accountability, and integrate compliance expectations across the organization.
Primary Responsibilities
- Partner with the GSE Compliance Officer to develop, implement, and maintain an enterprise-wide GSE Compliance Program, including governance structures, policies, procedures, and operating standards.
- Develop and maintain a centralized inventory of GSE requirements and obligations, including processes for identifying, assessing, and implementing regulatory and contractual changes.
- Establish and oversee compliance risk assessment methodologies and coordinate periodic assessments across business and corporate functions.
- Develop compliance processes, controls, tools, and technology solutions to support effective program execution, documentation, and reporting.
- Partner with business and functional leaders to identify compliance risks, establish appropriate controls, and strengthen accountability for GSE requirements.
- Provide independent oversight, guidance, and constructive challenge regarding first-line compliance controls, processes, and remediation activities.
- Build and lead a risk-based compliance monitoring and testing program, including testing methodologies, annual plans, and identification of control deficiencies.
- Establish and oversee a centralized compliance issue management framework, including risk assessment, escalation, corrective action tracking, and remediation validation.
- Collaborate with Internal Audit, Enterprise Risk Management, Legal, and other stakeholders to coordinate compliance oversight and support GSE reviews, audits, and examinations.
- Develop and present compliance metrics, risk assessments, dashboards, and program updates to senior leadership and relevant governance committees.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and identify opportunities to strengthen compliance processes, enhance technology, and improve operational efficiency.
- Serve as a senior advisor to the GSE Compliance Officer, leading strategic initiatives, supporting compliance training and awareness, and representing the compliance function in leadership and governance forums.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Attendance is generally required from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm local time, Tuesday through Thursday, with the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Risk Management, or a related field required.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in compliance, risk management, internal audit, mortgage banking, or commercial real estate finance, including leadership experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, or enhancing compliance programs, frameworks, policies, and processes.
- Experience managing compliance risk assessments, regulatory or contractual obligations, monitoring and testing programs, and issue remediation.
- Experience in second-line compliance, operational risk, or internal audit preferred.
- Experience leading teams and implementing compliance technology, reporting, or workflow solutions preferred.
- Relevant professional certifications in compliance, risk management, or auditing preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of Fannie Mae and/or Freddie Mac requirements, including applicable Selling and Servicing Guides.
- Strong understanding of compliance governance, risk management frameworks, internal controls, and regulatory oversight practices.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to translate complex requirements into practical compliance solutions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, manage competing priorities, and drive results in an evolving organizational environment.
- Sound judgment and the ability to provide independent oversight, constructively challenge existing practices, and influence stakeholders without direct authority.
- Ability to develop effective relationships and collaborate with business leaders while maintaining appropriate independence.
- Demonstrated accountability, adaptability, and ability to develop and implement new processes and initiatives.
- Ability to balance strategic priorities with day-to-day compliance responsibilities and operational needs.
- Ability to show ownership of your work, take on challenges and acknowledge growth opportunities, and demonstrate patience when learning new processes.
- Courtesy, respect, and thoughtfulness in teaming with colleagues and other stakeholders.
