Are you ready to lead the engineering teams building the intelligence at the heart of CoCounsel — Thomson Reuters’ next-generation AI legal platform? Do you thrive at the intersection of large-scale agentic systems, cutting-edge AI, and enterprise-grade reliability? If so, this is an opportunity to shape the future of how legal professionals work. As VP of Engineering, Agent Core, you will own the engineering vision and execution for the foundational layers of CoCounsel Next: the agent runtime, memory and intelligence systems, evaluation and the customization platform that allows customers and partners to extend CoCounsel with their own skills and tools. You will lead multiple engineering teams spanning agent infrastructure, AI capabilities, and platform extensibility, reporting directly to the Head of Engineering for CoCounsel Next. About the Role In this opportunity as VP, Engineering – Agent Core, you will: Define and execute the Agent Core engineering strategy, setting the technical direction for agent runtime infrastructure, AI intelligence pipelines, and the MCP-based customization platform — in alignment with CoCounsel’s product roadmap and Thomson Reuters’ broader AI strategy. Lead and develop engineering managers and their teams, fostering a high-performance, inclusive culture across a globally distributed organization. Drive talent assessment, performance differentiation, and career development at all levels. Own the reliability, scalability, and security of the agent runtime, including user authorization flows, session and file storage interactions, memory pipelines, I18n infrastructure, and runtime optimization for production-scale deployments. Drive Agent Intelligence capabilities, guiding teams building core agent capabilities, multilingual quality, organizational knowledge management, and long-term memory systems that make CoCounsel smarter over time. Build the Agent Customization platform, enabling customers and partners to extend CoCounsel with custom skills, MCP tools, and third-party integrations — including HighQ, Noetica, DeepJudge, and customer-provided MCP servers. Collaborate across the CoCounsel engineering pillar, partnering closely with the VP of Application Experience, AI Platform, Product Management, Design, and Security to deliver cohesive, enterprise-grade capabilities. Champion engineering excellence, establishing best practices for AI system development, testing, observability, and responsible AI deployment in a regulated legal environment. About You You’re a fit for the role of VP, Engineering – Agent Core if you have the following required qualifications: 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in senior engineering leadership managing managers and large distributed teams. Deep expertise building and scaling agentic AI systems, LLM-powered platforms, or AI infrastructure in a production enterprise environment. Strong technical foundation in backend systems engineering — distributed systems, reliability, security, and developer platforms. Experience with agent orchestration, memory systems, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and tool-use patterns (e.g., MCP, function calling). Proven success influencing cross-functional product and platform strategy at the VP or Director level. Demonstrated ability to communicate with clarity and conviction at all levels — from engineering teams to C-suite stakeholders. Additional preferred qualifications include: Experience in legal tech or professional services technology. Familiarity with compliance requirements in regulated industries (e.g., FedRAMP, HIPAA, CJIS). Experience building with or contributing to open agent/tool standards such as MCP or A2A. Track record of public technical thought leadership (publications, conference talks, or open-source contributions).
