Job Description

PerkinElmer is seeking a Vice President, LabPilot to lead and build the LabPilot business unit — a newly established, strategically important division focused on laboratory software, connectivity, and data management solutions. Reporting to the CTO, the VP LabPilot operates as a general manager with full P&L, portfolio, and people responsibility for a business that sits at the intersection of analytical science and digital laboratory transformation.

LabPilot represents PerkinElmer's opportunity to expand beyond hardware into the software and services layer of the laboratory — a market with distinct dynamics: faster product cycles, subscription-based commercial models, enterprise customer relationships, and deep integration with lab informatics ecosystems. The VP LabPilot must be equally comfortable with the scientific foundations of analytical data management and the commercial realities of software product leadership.

This is a build role. The VP will define the strategy, assemble the team, establish the operating model, and drive LabPilot from its current state toward a commercially scaled, market-leading position. It requires vision, commercial rigour, and the operational drive to turn strategy into revenue-generating product reality.

Responsibilities:

Business Unit Strategy & P&L

  • Own the LabPilot P&L: revenue, gross margin, customer acquisition and retention metrics, and multi-year growth trajectory — with clear accountability to AOP targets
  • Define and own the LabPilot product strategy: product vision, platform architecture direction, commercial model (perpetual, subscription, SaaS, services), and competitive positioning
  • Set pricing strategy for all LabPilot products and services — including platform licensing, module pricing, professional services, and support tiers
  • Drive AOP planning for the LabPilot business unit: revenue projections, investment requirements, headcount plans, and capital needs

Product Portfolio & NPI

  • Own the LabPilot product roadmap: prioritising platform development, new module releases, integration partnerships, and customer-driven enhancements based on commercial opportunity and technical feasibility
  • Approve all NPI gate decisions within LabPilot — ensuring each new product or major release has a rigorous business case, defined customer persona, and clear commercial launch plan
  • Maintain a portfolio view of build vs. buy vs. partner decisions — identifying where third-party technology or acquisition accelerates LabPilot's strategic position
  • Ensure the software PM and NPI PM have the strategic direction and resources they need to deliver a high-quality product portfolio on competitive timelines

Team Leadership

  • Build, lead, and develop the LabPilot product team — Strategic PM, NPI PM, Operations PM, and Software PM — establishing the roles, expectations, and operating cadence for a high-performing software-oriented product organisation
  • Recruit product and commercial talent as the business unit scales; define the target team structure for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of LabPilot's growth
  • Foster a product culture that is fast-moving, customer-obsessed, and commercially rigorous — appropriate for a software business competing against dedicated lab software specialists

Customer & Market Development

  • Build LabPilot's external market presence: customer advisory programme, key account relationships, conference presence, and thought leadership positioning in the lab informatics space
  • Own strategic partnership and integration relationships with LIMS, ELN, and broader lab ecosystem partners — ensuring LabPilot is positioned as an open, interoperable platform
  • Develop and maintain relationships with enterprise customer stakeholders — IT, operations, and lab management — who are the economic buyers of LabPilot solutions
  • Partner with the VP Marketing and Sr. Director, Strategic & Commercial Marketing to align LabPilot's go-to-market strategy with PerkinElmer's broader segment priorities

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Partner with R&D software engineering leadership on platform architecture, development resourcing, and technical roadmap decisions — holding the commercial strategy boundary while enabling R&D to own technical execution
  • Collaborate with the VP Product Line teams (Atomic, Chromatography, Mat Char) to ensure LabPilot integrates effectively with hardware product lines and creates cross-selling opportunity
  • Represent LabPilot in CTO-level portfolio reviews, investment committees, and executive discussions on digital strategy and software growth

Qualifications & Experience:

Required

  • 15+ years of experience in product management, software product leadership, or general management of a software or technology business, ideally with exposure to scientific instrumentation, lab informatics, or laboratory automation
  • Demonstrated P&L ownership in a software or SaaS product business — with direct accountability for revenue growth, margin management, and commercial model evolution
  • Experience building and leading product teams in a software environment: roadmap ownership, NPI governance, and cross-functional programme delivery
  • Working knowledge of lab informatics concepts: LIMS, ELN, instrument connectivity, data management, and the laboratory IT ecosystem
  • Strong executive presence and commercial confidence — able to sell the LabPilot vision to enterprise customers, technology partners, and internal PerkinElmer stakeholders
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline

Preferred

  • Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) in a scientific or technical discipline
  • Experience in a laboratory software company — LIMS, ELN, SDMS, or instrument data management — with deep understanding of enterprise customer buying behaviour
  • Track record of commercial model transformation: moving a product or product line from perpetual/transactional to subscription or SaaS
  • Familiarity with PerkinElmer's hardware portfolio and analytical data workflows

The annual compensation range for this full-time position is $220,000 to $260,000. The final base pay offered to the successful candidate will be determined by factors including internal equity, work location, as well as individual qualifications, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
