VP of Cloud Development
We are seeking a VP of Cloud Software Development to lead our cloud engineering organization and drive the technical direction of our cloud, data, and IoT platforms. Reporting to the CTO, you will own the strategy and delivery of our cloud transformation and the seamless integration between cloud and the edge devices deployed in the field across all our traffic technology products.
This is a leader who stays close to the technology. You will set direction, make the hard architectural calls, and roll up your sleeves with the team when it matters, while building a culture of speed, trust, and open communication. You will mentor engineers and leaders on both technology and methods, and lead by example in how we build, secure, and operate cloud software at scale.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and grow a global, fast-paced cloud software development organization, setting clear priorities, accountability, and a culture of ownership
- Own the cloud transformation strategy and roadmap, modernizing architecture, platforms, and delivery practices to support scale, reliability, and speed
- Define and drive the data lake and data platform strategy, including ingestion, storage, governance, analytics, and the data methods that turn device and operational data into customer value
- Own the IoT strategy and platform, including device identity and provisioning, telemetry, remote monitoring/management, and enterprise-scale OTA updates
- Drive cloud-to-edge integration in close partnership with hardware, embedded, and systems engineering, ensuring a coherent full-system architecture from roadside device to central control
- Own cloud and data security, including secure-by-design architecture, identity and access management, data protection, threat modeling, vulnerability management, and compliance with relevant standards
- Partner with the CTO to shape overall technology strategy and with the product organization to translate customer needs into platform capabilities and roadmap priorities
- Establish engineering excellence across the organization: architecture standards, DevOps/CI-CD, observability, reliability engineering, cost management, and quality practices
- Apply and evolve agile methods across multi-discipline, multi-site programs, aligning cloud delivery with hardware and embedded development cycles
- Support development and ISO process compliance across the cloud development lifecycle
- Mentor and develop senior leaders and engineers, both technically and in leadership, building a strong succession bench
- Manage budgets, vendor and partner relationships, and the build-versus-buy decisions for cloud, data, and IoT platforms
- Represent cloud engineering in executive reviews and with key customers and partners
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 7+ years leading engineering teams and managers, ideally in a VP, senior director, or equivalent role
- Proven track record leading fast-paced, global, distributed teams across multiple time zones and cultures
- Deep, hands-on expertise in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and modern cloud architecture, including microservices, containers, serverless, and infrastructure as code
- Demonstrated leadership of a cloud transformation, such as migration, re-architecture, or platform modernization at scale, fully utilizing the capabilities of AI-driven design, Agentic AI product realization and support
- Strong experience with data lake and data platform architecture, data pipelines, streaming and batch processing, and data governance
- Strong IoT experience: device-to-cloud architectures, IoT platforms, protocols (e.g., MQTT, HTTPS/REST, gRPC), fleet management, and OTA update strategy
- Strong grounding in security for cloud and connected devices: zero-trust principles, identity and access management, encryption, secure update and provisioning, and security compliance frameworks
- Experience with cloud-to-edge integration, working with embedded and hardware teams to deliver connected-device products
- Experience working within formal development processes and ISO standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 27001, ISO/SAE 21434, or equivalent)
- Practical experience applying agile methodologies at scale in multi-discipline engineering environments
- Exceptional emotional intelligence, an open-door leadership style, and a track record of building trust, engagement, and retention
- Demonstrated ability to lead by example and stay close to the technology, with credibility to mentor engineers on both technology and methods
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred)
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage executives, customers, and engineers alike
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in automotive, traffic management, ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems), or other infrastructure-critical connected-device domains
- Familiarity with cybersecurity standards for connected infrastructure (e.g., IEC 62443, ISO/SAE 21434, NIST guidance, SOC 2)
- Experience with AI/ML on data platforms, including edge-to-cloud model deployment and data pipelines for machine learning
- Experience managing outsourced development partners and offshore engineering teams
- Background in multi-tenant SaaS platforms, usage-based cost optimization (FinOps), and operating cloud services with strict availability targets
- Experience integrating organizations after mergers or reorganizations, aligning teams around common processes, tooling, and metrics
