ABOUT THE ROLE:
The business-led innovation team (Vista) within bp Supply Trading & Shipping (ST&S) business is set up with the mission to help future-proof the organization. We set out to answer three questions:
- How can technologies today solve yesterday’s problems faced by ST&S?
- How can technologies of tomorrow give us a commercial competitive edge today?
- What do we need to do/think/behave differently in a rapidly evolving business landscape?
Vista is a global, agile, impact-driven, and solution-agnostic team focused on identifying and leveraging innovative technologies, business models, and ecosystem partnerships to address commercial opportunities.
Vista is seeking a commercially minded innovation leader to shape the next iteration of its global Implementation pillar. The role begins once an opportunity has been qualified and selected through Vista’s Growth & Engagement-led intake and prioritisation process. From that point, the Implementation Lead is accountable for validating the underlying business problem, looking for opportunities to redesign the underlying business process (if relevant), establishing the right experiment and implementation approach, and converting evidence into sustained business change. This role combines responsibility of digital delivery or product management of early-stage experimentations, as well as bringing strong ST&S commercial judgement to implementation, and ensure selected initiatives solve the right process problem and deliver measurable outcomes.
Pillar interfaces and collaboration approach: Growth & Engagement owns awareness, relationships, opportunity origination, initial commercial framing, intake, hopper management and portfolio-level impact storytelling. Implementation owns selected initiatives from structured discovery through solution mapping (agnostic to build vs buy), experimentation, implementation, adoption and transition to a long-term owner. Entry into Implementation and decisions to scale or stop are jointly recommended through Vista governance, using evidence supplied by both pillars. This role contributes subject-matter challenge to upstream prioritisation efforts but does not own the inbound pipeline.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Selected-opportunity validation and business process redesign
- Take accountability for identified opportunities’ solutioning, including working with the Ecosystem pillar for weighing both build and buy solutions and the art of the possible.
- Ensuring consistent implementation best practices (eg commercial value cases in place, success criteria well defined, short & longer term solution visions considered, etc) are adopted before committing material experimentation or implementation resources.
- Lead end-to-end process discovery and redesign, addressing root causes, decision rights, controls, data, roles and ways of working before introducing technology. Note: not all opportunities require a process resign.
- Convert the validated opportunity into clear hypotheses, a target process or operating concept, measurable success criteria and a pragmatic implementation pathway.
- Return materially reframed opportunities to the agreed Vista governance forum where renewed prioritisation or sponsor commitment is required, rather than independently expanding the pipeline or scope.
Front-office-led experimentation and innovation enablement
- Provide reusable implementation methods, patterns and lessons to ST&S’s growing citizen developer community for wider capability-building and communications
Implementation strategy, adoption and scale
- Own the implementation plan for selected initiatives, integrating process, people, data, controls and technology with explicit business sponsorship, ownership and value measures.
- Mobilise the delivery coalition across trading, operations, functions and Technology needed to move from structured discovery to tested change and sustained adoption.
- Lead negotiation & alignment efforts with multiple functional partners (eg. various parts of Technology, Legal, Procurement, E&C, etc) for ensuring, fit-for-purpose (and sometimes bespoke) processes and ways of working are firmly agreed for innovation projects in ST&S
- Own initiative-level execution governance, including scope, dependencies, risks, controls, change impacts, resource needs and readiness decisions.
- Shape and execute the route to scale for validated initiatives, including integration with existing ST&S capabilities and transition to the appropriate long-term business or Technology owner.
- Confirm adoption and value-realisation evidence with the business owner, supplying verified outcomes and case-study inputs to Growth & Engagement, which owns portfolio-wide impact reporting and storytelling.
Portfolio, governance and financial stewardship
- Manage capacity, prioritisation and delivery health across initiatives accepted into the Implementation portfolio
- Establish proportionate initiative-level governance that enables rapid learning while overseeing execution risk, controls, dependencies, expenditure and business readiness.
- Maintain reliable evidence on process performance, adoption, realised value and implementation learning for each active initiative, feeding Growth & Engagement’s consolidated portfolio metrics.
- Recommend continue, reshape, scale or stop decisions through Vista governance. Portfolio entry, relative commercial prioritisation and enterprise narrative remain shared governance decisions rather than unilateral Implementation accountabilities.
Senior leadership within Vista
- Set the strategy, standards and operating model for Vista’s Implementation pillar, including clear acceptance criteria, hand-offs and decision rights with Growth & Engagement and Ecosystem & Partnering.
- Act as the senior commercial and process-change adviser (if needed) once a relevant opportunity enters structured validation, while upskilling the rest of the Vista team on the holistic problem-solving mindset and commercial acumen.
- Lead and develop a globally dispersed implementation team with capabilities in commercial problem diagnosis, process redesign, experimentation governance, adoption and transition to scale.
