Show job description

Company Description Embrace Sanctuary Australia is a community-focused organisation dedicated to supporting individuals and families forcibly displaced from their homelands. The organisation empowers, educates, and equips local communities to open their hearts and homes to people seeking safety and belonging. By creating safe, inclusive spaces, Embrace Sanctuary Australia helps community members connect, build relationships, and thrive together. The organisation is committed to ensuring that every person is seen, valued, and supported through compassionate, collaborative initiatives. Prospective applicants will join a mission-driven team working to strengthen community resilience and social inclusion.

Role Description The Voluntary Non-Executive Director will contribute to the strategic leadership, governance, and oversight of Embrace Sanctuary Australia as part of the Board. This is a volunteer, remote role focused on providing guidance on organisational direction, risk management, and long-term sustainability. Day-to-day activities may include attending scheduled board and committee meetings online, reviewing reports and policies, contributing to strategic planning discussions, and offering independent insight on key decisions. The Non-Executive Director will support fundraising and advocacy efforts, foster stakeholder relationships, and help ensure that programs align with the organisation’s mission and values. The role involves collaborating with other directors and senior leaders while maintaining an objective, governance-focused perspective rather than an operational one.

Qualifications

  • Governance and leadership skills, including experience with board participation, strategic planning, and oversight of not-for-profit or community organisations.
  • Financial and risk management capabilities, such as understanding budgets, financial reports, compliance obligations, and organisational risk frameworks.
  • Experience or strong interest in refugee support, settlement services, or community development, with sensitivity to culturally diverse and trauma-informed contexts.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work effectively in a remote environment and contribute constructively to collective decision-making.
  • Integrity, independence of judgment, and commitment to the organisation’s mission, with the ability to balance compassion with sound governance practices.
  • Relevant qualifications in areas such as governance, law, social work, community development, business, or related fields are beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience in fundraising, philanthropy, or partnership development is highly regarded.
