At Toku, we create bespoke cloud communications and customer engagement solutions to reimagine customer experiences for enterprises. We provide an end-to-end approach to help businesses overcome the complexity of digital transformation and deliver mission-critical CX through cloud communication solutions. Toku combines local strategic consulting expertise, bespoke technology, regional in-country infrastructure, connectivity, and global reach to serve the diverse needs of enterprises operating at scale. Headquartered in Singapore, Toku supports customers across APAC and beyond, with a growing footprint across global markets. As a publicly listed company, Toku continues to scale its presence and impact across international markets. We are looking for a VP of Engineering to lead our Product Engineering organisation across a distributed, multi-region environment. You will lead our Engineering Managers and squads, own how the organisation operates and delivers, set technical and architectural direction, and ensure the reliability of the communications platforms our customers depend on. You will bring the technical credibility to challenge architectural decisions while developing the teams, practices and engineering foundations required as Toku scales. Success in this role depends on combining strong technical judgement with decisive, resilient leadership in a complex production environment. What you will be doing Engineering leadership: Lead the Product Engineering organisation end-to-end, including 3–4 Engineering Managers and approximately 15–20 engineers, owning organisational structure, performance, engineering standards and the development of the leadership layer beneath you. Technical strategy & architecture: Own technical direction and platform architecture, guiding the evolution of scalable distributed systems, microservices, APIs and event-driven services while driving platformisation and the deliberate reduction of technical debt. Cloud & platform direction: Guide architectural decisions across our AWS-based, cloud-native environment, including containerization, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD and modern deployment practices, ensuring technology choices support scalability, reliability and operational simplicity. Delivery & execution: Own engineering delivery across BAU and concurrent customer programmes, establishing clear team ownership and delivery cadence, surfacing risk early and making informed decisions around priorities, sequencing and technical trade-offs. Production & reliability: Own engineering standards for production stability, observability and incident management across mission-critical voice, communications and AI services, ensuring major incidents lead to effective root-cause analysis and lasting improvements. Engineering evolution: Drive continuous improvement across architecture, engineering quality and delivery practices as Toku scales, with autonomy to challenge existing approaches and strengthen the foundations, processes and operating model of the organisation. Talent & culture: Hire, develop and retain strong engineers and engineering leaders, creating a culture of technical ownership, directness and high standards while addressing performance issues early and fairly. Product & stakeholder leadership: Partner closely with Product, Services, Support, Infrastructure and senior leadership, translating technical realities into clear business decisions and supporting senior customer conversations where engineering credibility is required. We’d love to hear from you if you have Engineering leadership: 12+ years in software engineering with significant senior leadership experience, ideally gained within a scaling SaaS technology company where you have helped an engineering organisation mature through periods of growth. Leadership at scale: Experience leading distributed engineering teams and developing Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders; experience operating around the scale of 50 engineers / 80 technology staff is a useful benchmark, although actual scope and ownership matter more than title. Large-scale SaaS systems: Experience with SaaS platforms serving broad customer bases and handling millions of transactions, with strong understanding of the architectural and operational challenges that emerge at scale. Architecture & distributed systems: Deep technical credibility across distributed systems, microservices, APIs and event-driven architecture, including technologies such as Kafka, AWS SQS and RabbitMQ, with the ability to set direction and challenge architectural decisions without being the day-to-day implementer. Cloud-native platforms: Strong architectural knowledge of AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform and CloudFormation, together with CI/CD, GitOps and modern cloud-native deployment practices. Production engineering: Significant experience overseeing reliability and incident response for mission-critical production systems, including SLIs/SLOs and difficult war-room situations where diagnosis and resolution require resilience and sound judgement under pressure. Observability: Strong knowledge of modern observability practices and tooling, including Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Sentry and CloudWatch, and the ability to establish effective standards for instrumentation, monitoring and alerting. Data & platform technologies: Strong understanding of production data architecture spanning SQL and NoSQL technologies such as DynamoDB, Cassandra and Redis, and sufficient familiarity with TypeScript/ Node.js environments to oversee mixed technology estates. Engineering organisation building: A track record of hiring and developing engineering teams, strengthening operating practices, managing performance and creating sustainable leadership capability as an organisation scales. Stakeholder judgement: Strong communication and decision-making skills, with experience balancing engineering quality, reliability, delivery commitments and commercial priorities alongside Product, Services and senior leadership. Communications domain (nice to have): Experience within CCaaS, CPaaS, UCaaS, messaging, voice, telephony or communications platforms is advantageous rather than essential, as is experience supporting regulated enterprise or public-sector customers. Location: This role can be based in The Netherlands – Europe, or South East Asia locations, supporting globally distributed teams Toku has been recognised as a LinkedIn Top Startup and by the Financial Times as one of APAC’s Top 500 High Growth Companies. If you’re looking to be part of a company on a strong growth trajectory while working on meaningful, real-world challenges, we’d love to hear from you.
