Help us turn water-smart ideas into practical solutions!
At Anglian Water, we know that creating sustainable, resilient places means thinking differently about how water is planned, designed and managed.
We’re looking for a Water Smart Development Specialist to provide the technical knowledge and practical support needed to help make water-smart development happen.
Working within our Environmental Outcomes / Sustainability team, you’ll support developers, designers, local authorities, delivery partners and colleagues across Anglian Water to understand, design and implement water-smart solutions. You’ll help translate emerging technology, evidence and best practice into practical guidance that can be applied to real developments.
Building on the learning and evidence developed through Enabling Water Smart Communities (EWSC), you’ll also provide specialist technical support to Building Water Smart Places (BWSP) and our wider Integrated Water Management activities.
Key responsibilities
A major part of the role will be helping make water-smart approaches easier to understand and implement, providing practical technical input from early-stage development thinking through to demonstrator projects and real-world delivery.
- Provide specialist technical advice on water efficiency, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, sustainable drainage, non-potable water systems and other water-smart approaches
- Support development projects, reviewing proposals, responding to technical enquiries and helping project teams identify practical opportunities to integrate water-smart solutions
- Turn technical knowledge into practical tools, developing design guidance, technical notes, example specifications and implementation resources
- Support demonstrator and pilot projects, helping evaluate different technologies and delivery approaches and capturing what works in practice
- Build capability across the sector, delivering workshops, training and knowledge-sharing activities for internal and external audiences
- Track emerging technologies and good practice, helping us understand how changes in standards, regulation and innovation could unlock new opportunities
- Capture and share learning, helping successful approaches to be understood, replicated and ultimately adopted more widely
- Provide technical input to BWSP and wider Integrated Water Management initiatives, helping connect innovation and evidence with practical delivery
We invest in our people - as a valued employee, you’ll be entitled to:
- Personal private health care
- Generous double match pension – contribute 7% and Anglian Water will contribute 14%, giving a total contribution of 21%
- 24-hour Virtual GP service for you and your household
- 26 days annual leave – rising with length of service and the ability to buy more
- Life assurance (up to 8 x salary)
- Personal accident cover (up to 5 x salary)
- Excellent family friendly policies, such as 26 weeks full pay for maternity / adoption leave, as well as 4 weeks paid paternity / partner leave. Opportunity for shared parental pay
- Bonus scheme
- Flexible benefits and working culture to support your wellbeing and lifestyle.
What does it take to be successful?
We’re looking for someone who combines technical understanding with a real enthusiasm for finding practical solutions.
- Experience supporting the design, specification or implementation of water, environmental or infrastructure solutions, ideally within the built environment
- Knowledge of one or more areas such as water efficiency, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, public health engineering, sustainable drainage or Integrated Water Management
- The ability to translate complex technical information into clear, accessible and practical guidance
- Strong communication and stakeholder-engagement skills, with the confidence to work collaboratively with developers, consultants, local authorities, utilities and delivery partners
- Experience developing or communicating technical guidance or best practice, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, accessible and practical advice.
- A practical approach to problem-solving, balancing technical, environmental, operational and commercial considerations.
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage several technical activities and stakeholder requests while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
- Membership of, or progress towards membership of, a relevant professional institution would be welcomed.
- A degree-level qualification, or equivalent experience, in engineering, building services, environmental management, water management, sustainability, planning or another relevant discipline.
Experience working in housing, development, planning or construction would be useful, as would practical knowledge of water reuse or non-potable water systems, demonstrator programmes, technical guidance development or training
