Reports to: Senior Developer
WHO ARE WE?
Go Ape is the UKs number 1 adventure company with locations nationwide and multiple activities. We’ve been providing adventures since 2002 and have welcomed over 10 million customers, but we’re not done yet and have big ambitions for the future.
Go Ape is now Employee Owned that means every Go Ape employee whether full time, part time or a seasonal worker are now co-owners of the business. As a co-owner you will be empowered to voice your opinions and ideas through an elected Employee Council and have a real say in helping to shape the business.
About the Role
Join Go Ape's tech team to help shape our digital presence and work on our internal tools. You'll be at the forefront of maintaining and evolving our customer-facing website and aiding in the development of modern applications to replace legacy PowerApps systems. This is a hands-on role where you'll work across the full stack, from our Astro-powered public website to Laravel APIs and React web apps.
You'll be mentored by our Senior Developer with regular code review and pairing sessions, to help you develop your skills and grow your confidence.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll start with small, well-defined work and take on more as your confidence grows.
Website Development & Management
- Maintain and enhance goape.co.uk using our modern stack: Astro, React 19, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS 4
- Integrate with our headless CMS Dato and Laravel API
- Help make our site faster, more accessible and easier to find, keeping our outdoor adventures discoverable
- Learn to ship your own work through our Cloudflare Pages pipeline
Application Development & Modernisation
- Contribute to the new applications replacing our legacy PowerApps tools, built with Next.js, React and TypeScript
- Help connect those applications to the systems we already run
- Learn our practices for keeping data secure and compliant
- Support and improve what we've built, iteration by iteration
Collaboration & Technical Excellence
- Work with the IT team and the wider business to understand what people need and build it
- Write things down, learn our version control practices and add to our technical knowledge base
- Help troubleshoot issues across our digital estate
- Make the most of mentoring and code reviews to continue building your skills and craft quickly
What We're Looking For
Essential Skills
- You've written some code, in any language, and enjoyed it enough to carry on
- You understand roughly how a web page is put together with HTML and CSS
- You can break a task or a process down into clear steps and work out where it goes wrong
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and the persistence to stay with something that isn't working yet
- Clear communication, including with colleagues who aren't technical
- A genuine appetite for learning and the habit of picking things up under your own steam
Highly Desirable
- Experience with Astro or other static site generators
- Any experience with JavaScript, React or another component-based framework
- Familiarity with TypeScript, Git, or Tailwind CSS
- Anything you've built or automated to fix a real problem at work, including with PowerApps, Power Automate, Excel formulas or similar
- Comfort working with data: how records relate to each other, and how to filter, sort and check them
- Any backend experience, with Laravel, PHP or anything else
- Exposure to APIs, SEO, web performance or accessibility
- Something you've built that you can show us, however small or unfinished
- First-hand experience of how Go Ape operates on the ground
Haven't Built Anything Yet?
That's fine, and it's not a reason to sit this one out. If you're interested in being a developer apply and we can discuss your experience together.
