Web Developer / WordPress & Bricks Specialist

About the role

Accountants Direct is looking for an experienced Web Developer / WordPress Specialist to take technical ownership of our established WordPress and Bricks Builder website, keeping it stable and secure, building new functionality and pages, troubleshooting issues, managing updates and integrations, and continually improving performance.

The site's supporting stack includes Automatic.css, Frames, BricksExtras, Advanced Custom Fields, WPCodeBox, performance and security plugins, SMTP and Cloudways hosting.

We're looking for someone who understands how an existing website works before making changes, solves problems methodically, and leaves the site better documented and easier to maintain.

Key responsibilities

1. WordPress development and maintenance. Own day-to-day maintenance and development of the site: building new pages, templates and functionality; working with themes, child themes, plugins, custom code, custom post types and fields; ensuring changes work across all devices; and keeping documentation up to date.
2. Bricks Builder. Strong practical experience building and maintaining templates, headers/footers, sections, components, global classes, responsive breakpoints, dynamic data, custom post type/archive templates, Query Loop and conditional rendering, while maintaining the existing design system rather than creating one-off styles.
3. Automatic.css and design system (desirable). Understanding of utility classes, global styling and responsive spacing/typography, and how to add new pages and components consistently with the existing design system.
4. WordPress coding. Good HTML/CSS ability plus understanding of WordPress hooks, filters, shortcodes, child themes, plugins, code snippets, CSS debugging and basic security principles; WPCodeBox 2 experience valuable.
5. Custom fields and data. Advanced Custom Fields experience is mandatory: creating and managing fields, understanding how field changes affect existing data, and displaying field data dynamically in Bricks.
6. Troubleshooting and debugging. Diagnose and resolve WordPress, plugin, theme, Bricks, CSS, caching and performance issues (including non-delivering forms) using browser dev tools, debug/server logs, database inspection and staging environments, with a methodical, evidence-based approach.
7. Website performance. Maintain and improve caching, asset/image/database optimisation, page-builder and PHP performance and OPcache; Perfmatters/Breeze experience and understanding of WebP/AVIF formats desirable.
8. Security, backups and production management. Maintain an appropriate backup strategy, use staging environments, test thoroughly after updates, apply least-privilege permissions, and know how to roll back a change that causes problems on the live site.
9. Cloudways and hosting (highly desirable). May include managing hosting, backups/restores, staging, PHP versions, database, caching and server logs, and identifying whether an issue originates in WordPress, a plugin, the database or hosting.
10. Forms, email and integrations. Maintain website forms and email delivery, troubleshooting cases where emails don't arrive (SMTP config, logs, spam filtering); FluentSMTP experience desirable.
11. SEO. Support technical SEO health (sitemaps, canonical URLs, redirects, indexing, URL changes) and understand how technical changes can affect search visibility; not a strategic SEO role, and Rank Math Pro experience is desirable.
12. Taking over and documenting an existing website. Build a clear understanding of hosting, WordPress configuration, themes, plugins, Bricks templates, custom code, database structure and other technical dependencies before making significant changes.

Essential Skills and Criteria

1. Strong practical WordPress development experience, including maintaining an existing production website.
2. Strong Bricks Builder experience; good HTML/CSS skills.
3. Strong troubleshooting and debugging ability; experience with responsive web development.
4. Understanding of WordPress themes, child themes, plugins and custom code.
5. Understanding of website performance, caching, security and backups.
6. Ability to work safely and independently on production websites, taking ownership of technical problems.
7. Ability to understand and document an existing technical environment.
8. Deep understanding of custom post types and dynamic content.

Desirable Experience
