You enjoy working across a variety of project types and collaborating with a variety of different team members that includes botanists, wetland scientists, GIS specialists, and more. Whether performing field surveys or preparing technical reports, you bring a thoughtful and solution-oriented approach to your work. You are comfortable working closely with project team members including onsite personnel and colleagues to help move projects forward. About the Job We are currently seeking a Wildlife Ecologist with the ability to work on a diverse range of projects and spend time both in the office and in the field. Working both independently and collaboratively, you will contribute to projects through conducting surveys and habitat assessments, contributing to environmental documents, and supporting compliance with project requirements while contributing to ecological-based solutions. When in the field you may perform surveys and monitoring for a variety of wildlife species and conduct habitat assessments. When not doing fieldwork, you’ll contribute to reports and build your consulting skills and experience by collaborating with senior staff. You would be locally based in the San Francisco Bay area, as the position requires regular visits to local area projects. Project work is primarily throughout the San Francisco Bay area and central California coast, but occasionally will involve work in other parts of California (and possibly beyond). Assignments may involve working nights, occasional weekends, and early mornings; occasional work in inclement weather; and walking over varied terrain. This position may offer in-office, remote, or hybrid opportunities based on the candidate’s location and the needs of the organization. Responsibilities Preparing documentation related to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) or California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) for local, state, and federal agency projects; working on projects located in sensitive areas with unique or challenging issues (e.g., related to wetlands, riparian setbacks, bird-safe design, and endangered or sensitive wildlife species) Performing federal and California Endangered Species Act consultations Providing compliance support, including making recommendations to minimize constraints on project activities, conducting pre-activity surveys, supporting compliance with project permits (including conducting surveys, environmental training sessions, and construction monitoring), and drafting reports for compliance documentation. Assessing biological constraints to proposed projects, including potential mitigation measures that may be necessary under CEQA/NEPA or conditions of anticipated permits or Endangered Species Act approvals. Preparing mitigation and monitoring plans in collaboration with our restoration ecologists to develop wildlife management and monitoring methods, success criteria, and avoidance and minimization measures Requirements Qualifications Candidates should hold an M.S. or Ph.D. focusing on local wildlife species and habitats, or equivalent extensive local experience. The ideal candidate will have: 2+ years of applicable professional experience (in addition to a graduate degree) Prior experience authoring and editing technical reports, with demonstrated exceptional writing ability (e.g., via transcripts, personal references, or a submitted writing sample) Experience with a variety of special-status wildlife species and their habitats in the greater San Francisco Bay Area Excellent written and oral communication skills A desire to grow both intellectually and professionally Strong organizational abilities Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers Compensation is commensurate with experience and internal equity, within the listed range. An employee’s total compensation package includes annual salary; company-subsidized (employee and family) medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) participation with a company match of 1% to 4% of annual compensation; company-paid life and short- and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave (10 days), paid vacation (12-15 days; determined by title at hire), and paid holidays (9 days) per year; and the potential for an annual discretionary bonus based on company performance. Paid time off will be prorated to reflect part-time scheduled hours, if applicable.
