Great educational content starts with understanding how people think and learn. Great writing makes that understanding feel simple, useful, and human. We’re looking for a Writer with exceptional critical thinking skills who can turn complex ideas and learning goals into clear, engaging digital experiences. At Ascendium Education Solutions, you’ll create lessons, interactive content, emails, product copy, and resources that help learners build confidence and move forward in school and life. You’ll need a sharp instinct for audience, strong editorial judgment, and the ability to adapt your approach based on what each digital experience calls for.

When applying, please include a cover letter and writing sample.

This position requires residence in or relocation to Madison, Wisconsin, where Ascendium is headquartered. Madison-based employees have a hybrid schedule, working three days per week in the office and two days remotely, which provides the opportunity for valuable in-person collaboration. Applicants who live outside commuting distance of Madison, Wisconsin, will be expected to relocate to the area within 3-6 months of hire.

Job Responsibilities

On a day-to-day basis, you may do the following.

  • Draft original digital learning content, including lesson intros, core content, instructional interactions, quizzes, reflections, transitions, and outros.
  • Translate learning goals and content direction into thoughtful learning experiences, considering what learners need to understand and how ideas should build on one another.
  • Create learner-facing resources, emails, notifications, product feature copy, and other content that supports engagement across the digital experience.
  • Write in a warm, approachable voice while adapting tone, structure, examples, and messaging for different audiences, topics, and content types.
  • Transform complex academic, financial, legal, and life topics into clear, concise, mobile-friendly content while preserving important nuance and accuracy.
  • Work within established brand voice, reading-level, formatting, user interface, and content design standards.
  • Ensure individual lessons support learning goals and fit within the broader curriculum, maintaining continuity and purposeful progression across content.
  • Apply strong editorial and instructional judgment when revising content, incorporating feedback while preserving the learning goal, audience needs, brand voice, and coherence of the experience.
  • Collaborate with the content strategist, learning experience designer, product management team, and other stakeholders throughout the content creation and review process.
  • Manage multiple content types and projects at different stages of development while continually learning new subject matter, audiences, and approaches.
  • Support content management system implementation by preparing copy for upload, formatting interactive components, and reviewing rendered content for accuracy, clarity, and user flow.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

A highly qualified candidate will possess the following.

  • Knowledge equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, journalism, communications, English, social sciences, or a similar field. Professional skill and closely related work experience may be considered in lieu of education credentials.
  • 3+ years of experience creating digital content that helps people learn, understand complex information, make decisions, or take action. Experience that combines education or instructional work with professional writing is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional writing and critical thinking skills, including the ability to break down concepts, identify meaningful connections, and organize information into logical, approachable learning experiences.
  • Strong instructional instincts and an understanding of how people build knowledge, including the ability to sequence information intentionally and determine what a learner needs at each stage of an experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in a natural, conversational voice for college-age and young adult audiences, with writing samples that showcase clarity, warmth, and strong editorial judgment.
  • Exceptional audience awareness and the ability to adjust content based on learners’ experiences, needs, existing knowledge, and circumstances rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Experience creating concise digital content within user interface and format constraints, including interactive learning experiences, emails, notifications, resources, product copy, or other short-form content.
  • Ability to move between different kinds of writing and subject matter while maintaining a consistent brand voice and adapting the approach to the purpose of each experience.
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail, particularly when working with nuanced or sensitive topics that require accuracy, empathy, and careful framing.
  • Ability to interpret and thoughtfully incorporate feedback while maintaining the intent and integrity of the content.
  • Intellectual curiosity and an eagerness to learn unfamiliar subject matter, ask thoughtful questions, identify gaps, and continually improve the learner experience.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and project management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in teaching, educational content, journalism, learning design, higher education, nonprofit communications, education finance, or government is a plus. Experience spanning both education and professional writing is especially valuable.
