Additive Manufacturing Manager - Data Center Cooling
Baltimore, MD area (Hybrid; lab near BWI, 2-3 days per week)
$175,000-$225,000 base + equity
We're hiring an Additive Manufacturing Manager (metal L-PBF, DfAM) to set up and run in-house printing of AI-designed heat exchangers for hyperscale data centers. As Additive Manufacturing Manager you'll commission a large-format metal printer, build the lab from scratch and own quality across the print and post-processing chain.
About the Company
Our client is a seed-funded hardware start-up (c.5 people, $7.5M raised, founded 2022) working on US Eastern hours, with a lab near Baltimore. It uses AI and multiphysics simulation to design thermal hardware, starting with heat exchangers for data centers, defence and heavy industry.
Why We're Hiring
The company is bringing metal printing in house. It needs a builder who has stood up a metal printing cell before and can hold its overseas manufacturing partner to spec.
Key Responsibilities
- Stand up and run an in-house metal L-PBF lab: buy equipment, commission a large-format printer, write operating procedures and manage a lab technician.
- Act as the DfAM expert alongside the thermal engineers, making large (200-300 lb), thin-walled, internal-channel heat exchangers printable.
- Own the technical relationship with an overseas manufacturing partner: approve parameters and build packages, and reject builds that miss spec.
- Oversee post-processing and quality: depowdering, support removal, heat treatment, CT scanning, and leak and pressure testing.
- Take nonconformances to root cause and drive down print time, cost and yield loss.
- Join international factory visits once or twice a year and help shape a future production facility.
Required Skills & Experience
- 3+ years in additive manufacturing (5+ years preferred), with hands-on metal laser powder bed fusion on large-format, multi-laser machines (400 mm+ build envelopes).
- Practical DfAM experience changing designs to improve yield, weight, cycle time or cost.
- Post-print processing and quality testing: stress relief, heat treatment, internal depowdering, CT scanning, leak testing and NCRs.
- Experience holding outside manufacturers or service bureaus to spec.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Materials or Manufacturing Engineering, or similar.
- On site near BWI 2-3 days a week (commuting range from Philadelphia to Arlington, VA, or willing to relocate), with availability for early or late calls and 1-2 international trips a year.
Nice to Have
- Commissioned a metal AM cell or set up a printer fleet (installation, powder handling, inert gas, safety).
- Managed additive manufacturing technicians.
- Hard-tech start-up or high-consequence metal manufacturing experience (energy, aerospace, defence, computing).
Summary Benefits
- $175k-$225k base (top of range for exceptional candidates) plus competitive equity
- Possible signing bonus to cover relocation
- Hybrid, 2-3 days a week at the lab near BWI
- Build and run a new lab from day one
Candidates must be authorised to work in the US. Visa transfers can be considered for exceptional candidates.
