About The Company

Capital One is using technology, data, and artificial intelligence to help change banking for good. For years, the company has applied machine learning to create real-time, personalized customer experiences, from identifying unusual charges to helping customers get answers to their questions. Capital One’s investments in technology infrastructure and talent, combined with its experience in machine learning, support the development of responsible AI products and scalable, high-performance systems.

The Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team helps bring Capital One’s AI vision to life. Working with partners across the company, IFX advances AI science and engineering and builds proprietary models and platforms that enable teams to deliver useful, responsible AI experiences to millions of customers.

About The Role

Capital One is seeking an AI Engineer 4 to design and deliver advanced AI systems for customers and associates. You will collaborate with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to turn emerging AI capabilities into reliable products and foundational technology. The role spans the full development lifecycle, from architecture and experimentation through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing support.

You will work with technologies such as foundation models, large language models, AI agents, multi-agent workflows, similarity search, vector databases, and model guardrails. You will also help improve the cost, latency, throughput, scalability, and performance of AI systems in production. This position offers the opportunity to shape long-term technical direction and translate promising research into secure, maintainable, and ethically aligned applications.

Qualifications

Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and at least four years of experience developing AI or machine-learning algorithms or technologies; or a relevant master’s degree and at least two years of that experience. Candidates must also have at least four years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.

Preferred qualifications include experience leading AI system development and making tradeoffs among cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy; deploying responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms; and designing, delivering, and supporting AI services. Experience with LLM inference, vector databases, similarity search, guardrails, memory, agentic systems, and training or inference optimization is valuable. Additional strengths include distributed systems at large scale, AI governance and model lineage, automated retraining practices, and the ability to influence architecture across products or platforms. Strong engineering and mathematical foundations, curiosity about AI research, clear communication, and sound judgment are important to success.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including model training and inference, agent workflows, evaluation, experimentation, governance, observability, and guardrails. Own architecture for complex systems, keeping them maintainable, reliable, secure, and aligned with responsible AI standards. Define and maintain service-level objectives for latency, availability, and model performance, and monitor systems for drift and operational issues.

Apply modern optimization techniques to improve hardware utilization and production performance. Partner with infrastructure teams on GPU and TPU utilization and inference pipelines, and use open-source and cloud technologies such as PyTorch, Hugging Face, vector databases, and AWS services. Lead technical reviews for deployments, help shape the foundational AI roadmap, and mentor senior colleagues in scalable design, performance tuning, and moving research into production.

Benefits

Capital One offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package supporting employees’ health, financial security, and overall well-being. Benefits and eligibility vary according to employment status and management level. The role may also include performance-based incentive compensation, such as cash bonuses or long-term incentives. The listed annual salary ranges are $197,300–$225,100 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia, and $215,200–$245,600 in New York, New York; San Francisco, California; and San Jose, California. Pay for other locations may differ. Capital One will consider sponsorship for qualified applicants seeking employment authorization.

Equal Opportunity

Capital One is an equal opportunity employer committed to non-discrimination in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, including protections for individuals with disabilities and veterans. The company promotes a drug-free workplace and considers qualified applicants with criminal histories consistent with applicable law. Reasonable accommodations are available during the recruiting process. Information provided for an accommodation will be kept confidential and used only as needed to provide assistance.
