Smith Veterinary Hospital is looking for a full-time Small Animal GP Veterinarian to join our team in Santa Fe, NM
About You
Maybe you’re not looking. But one of these probably sounds familiar:
- You’re a GP who likes the cases that need a real workup.
- You’re an ER or urgent care doctor ready to trade overnights for clients you’ll see again.
- You’re a new grad who’d rather not figure out your first year on your own.

What General Practice Looks Like Here
- Your week: four ten-hour shifts, weekends off. We’re open Monday through Friday.
- Real autonomy, real backup: your own GP caseload (wellness, internal medicine, dentistry, and surgery) with dedicated, experienced support staff. No urgent care shifts, and overnight cases go to the 24/7 hospital minutes away.
- More medicine, regular surgery: plenty of internal medicine work-ups, same-day sick visits that sometimes need hospitalization or surgery, and a rotating surgery day every other week.
- The tools to work it up on the spot: an oxygen ICU, isolation wards, two ultrasound units, digital and dental radiography, a full in-house lab, and an in-house pharmacy.
- Your first year, not on your own: new grads get a full year of structured mentorship, from our experienced Medical Director, and a regional mentor focused on your continued development.
- A chance to build something: we're working toward building a team of eight to ten doctors, bringing together talented veterinarians who share our commitment to exceptional patient care.
About Smith Veterinary Hospital
We opened in 1946. In 1950, our founder, Dr. Edwin J. Smith, treated a badly burned bear cub pulled from a New Mexico wildfire — the cub the world came to know as Smokey Bear. The fourth generation of the Smith family still works here.
We’re an AAHA-accredited, feline-friendly certified general practice seeing dogs and cats — wellness, internal medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery, plus same-day sick visits for our own clients. Our client base spans generations of Santa Fe families who come back to us year after year. A team-first mindset and comfort with asking questions matter here.
Our 12,640 sq. ft. hospital has separate canine and feline wings with a dedicated cat entrance, 10 exam rooms, and a two-table surgical suite.
Santa Fe has a small-town feel without being a small town — hiking and fishing minutes away, a historic downtown, and Albuquerque an hour south. We serve Santa Fe County and northern New Mexico.
Your Experience & Skills
If you’ve read this far and you’re still weighing it, that’s a normal place to be. A conversation commits you to nothing, and we’re happy to answer questions from someone who is only half looking — [email protected]. And if you'd rather talk to a doctor than a recruiter first, Dr. Amy Land, our Medical Director, is happy to take a call.
