Backend Engineer

We’re working with a rapidly scaling AI company developing intelligent digital workers that can execute complex, multi-step business processes for enterprise customers. Their platform combines AI, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, and security to enable AI agents to operate directly within the tools and systems businesses use every day.

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll be responsible for building the backend systems and infrastructure that make these AI-powered workflows reliable, secure, and scalable. This is a highly cross-functional engineering role spanning distributed backend services, cloud infrastructure, enterprise integrations, security, and internal developer tooling.

What You’ll Work On

• Design and build backend services that support AI-powered workloads across multiple enterprise customer environments.
• Develop core infrastructure for identity, authentication, authorization, permissions, RBAC, and access management.
• Build backend systems that allow AI agents to securely interact with applications including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Teams, Zoom, email, and telephony platforms.
• Develop and maintain integrations with business-critical systems such as NetSuite, SharePoint, Google Drive, SAP, Oracle, and other enterprise applications.
• Build APIs, services, and infrastructure abstractions that enable reliable communication between AI systems and external software.
• Develop tooling for customer onboarding, provisioning, configuration, deployment, and environment management.
• Own production services from initial design through deployment, monitoring, observability, incident response, and ongoing optimization.
• Identify performance, scalability, and reliability challenges as the platform expands across customers and increasingly sophisticated AI workloads.
• Work closely with AI, application, and infrastructure engineers to define service boundaries, APIs, system architecture, and reusable engineering patterns.
• Automate operational workflows and deployment processes to reduce manual effort and improve engineering velocity.
• Design systems for tenant isolation, data protection, authorization, auditing, and secure execution of AI-driven workflows.
• Contribute to architectural decisions as the company scales its product, infrastructure, engineering organization, and customer base.
• Drive projects independently from technical design and implementation through production ownership.
• Help establish backend engineering standards, infrastructure patterns, and best practices across the organization.

What You’ll Bring

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 2+ years of experience building production software, backend systems, cloud infrastructure, or distributed services.
• Experience developing systems where scalability, reliability, security, and performance are critical.
• Strong understanding of APIs, distributed systems, authentication, authorization, IAM, RBAC, and permissions.
• Experience building integrations with enterprise SaaS platforms, productivity tools, communication systems, or other business-critical software.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, production deployments, monitoring, observability, incident response, and operational tooling.
• Ability to work across backend and infrastructure layers to diagnose and solve complex technical problems.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to make sound architectural decisions in production environments.
• Demonstrated ownership of technical projects from initial design through implementation and production operation.
• Familiarity with enterprise security, SOC 2, compliance, data protection, access governance, or vendor security processes is a plus.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with AI, backend, infrastructure, and product engineering teams.
• Comfortable working in an early-stage environment with significant autonomy and evolving technical requirements.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base Salary: $235,000 – $290,000, depending on experience
• Location: San Francisco, CA, Hybrid
