Position Summary The Medical Director will provide clinical, strategic, and operational leadership for the hepatology medical management and liver transplant program. The role will oversee high-quality, evidence-based care for patients with advanced liver disease throughout the continuum, including hepatology care, transplant evaluation, pre-transplant optimization, waitlist management, post-transplant medical management, and long-term transplant follow-up. The Medical Director will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, safe, efficient, and patient-centered care. Preferred Experience Experience in liver transplant candidate evaluation and listing, waitlist management, post-transplant medical management, transplant quality improvement, UNOS/OPTN and CMS requirements, program development, physician recruitment, and clinical research would be highly desirable. Key Performance Areas The Medical Director will be expected to contribute to improvements in patient access, transplant evaluation and waitlist outcomes, transplant and post-transplant clinical outcomes, patient experience, regulatory compliance, physician and staff engagement, program growth, and overall quality and efficiency of the hepatology and transplant program. Key Responsibilities • Provide clinical leadership for patients with advanced and end-stage liver disease. • Oversee medical management of liver transplant candidates and recipients. • Participate in transplant evaluation, candidate selection, listing, and waitlist management. • Develop evidence-based clinical protocols for cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, hepatocellular carcinoma, viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disease, and other complex liver conditions. • Partner closely with the Transplant Surgical Director and multidisciplinary transplant leadership. • Lead quality, patient-safety, and performance-improvement initiatives. • Monitor transplant outcomes, complications, readmissions, mortality, graft survival, and patient survival. • Ensure compliance with applicable UNOS/OPTN, CMS, accreditation, and institutional requirements. • Develop strategies to improve access, referral growth, transplant evaluation efficiency, patient experience, and continuity of care. • Recruit, mentor, and develop hepatologists, transplant hepatologists, APPs, and other clinical team members. • Foster collaboration among physicians, transplant coordinators, nursing, pharmacy, social work, nutrition, and other members of the multidisciplinary team. • Support education, clinical research, quality-improvement initiatives, and education activities. • Collaborate with executive leadership on program strategy, resource allocation, financial planning, and growth. Qualifications • MD or DO from an accredited medical school. • Board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. • Advanced training and/or substantial clinical experience in hepatology and liver transplantation. • Transplant Hepatology board certification preferred, where applicable. • Current unrestricted medical license in the state of practice. • Eligible for appropriate hospital and transplant program privileges. • Demonstrated expertise in advanced liver disease and liver transplantation. • Prior medical leadership, transplant program, or clinical program-development experience strongly preferred.
