The Opportunity

Our internship opportunity allows you to explore your career path by providing hands-on experience in both the field and office. We connect you with industry-leading mentors and a cohort of top-tier students from across Canada. We are hiring for a 4- or 8-month summer internship starting in May 2027 in our Engineering division in Fort St. John.

Our preference is for candidates who are adaptable and able to work in the field and travel to project sites as required by the role.

Our interns work with multidisciplinary engineering teams to apply their academic knowledge and assist with project delivery from design to construction. Whether it’s developing drawings or conducting site inspections, you’ll gain the skills and training needed to solve real-world problems.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with Engineers and Project Managers to develop designs from conceptual to detailed stages, using AutoCAD Civil 3D for multidisciplinary projects.
  • Conduct field inspections for infrastructure construction and liaise with contractors on client sites.
  • Work with the team to ensure schedules, budgets, quality control, and safety standards are met and maintained.
  • Gain exposure to various McElhanney services, including materials testing, construction management, municipal infrastructure, transportation, water resources, geotechnical, bridge, and structural engineering.
  • Participate in McElhanney’s industry-leading safety practices to exceed client needs while ensuring our teams Think Safe, Work Safe, and Get Home Safe.

Practice Areas You'll Focus On
As part of your experience, you’ll be exposed to a number of different disciplines and projects, allowing you to gain knowledge and skills in a wide range of civil engineering focus areas. You will work on real-world projects related to several of the disciplines below and be supported by a multidisciplinary team of experts.


  • Water Resources: Managing water systems, including flood control and stormwater management.
  • Municipal Engineering: Design and development of urban infrastructure, including roads, water distribution systems, and waste management.
  • Land Development: Planning and engineering of residential, commercial, and industrial land development projects.
  • Environmental Engineering: Preparing environmental solutions that balance ecological protection with client needs, offering expertise in assessment, remediation, planning, and sustainable design.
  • Construction Management: Managing construction projects from start to finish, ensuring quality, budget, and safety standards are met.
  • Structural: Complete structural field reviews, where you will assess damage, new construction, or expansions or buildings and facilities, and coordinate with our Structural Engineers of Record to ensure their designs and recommendations are being implemented.
  • Geotechnical/Materials Testing: Learn to assess and test soils and construction materials to ensure stability and safety in various designs.
  • Materials Testing: Perform proctors and sieves, as well as operate a nuclear densometer to confirm compaction testing during construction is meet specifications as outlined in Engineered drawings.
  • Geomatics: Support survey crews in collecting topographic, legal, or other spatial data for engineering design.

What You'll Bring

  • Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Civil Engineering.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit or related software is an asset.
  • Previous work experience in Civil Engineering or Construction is an asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail, sound judgment, and clear communication skills.
  • Willing to work in varied environmental conditions, able to work in wildlife populated areas, and willing to work in remote areas for extended periods and varied hours.

The salary range for this position is $23-$32 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
