Job Summary

University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is seeking one Consultant Ortho-Geriatrician to join one of the largest and most ambitious trauma and perioperative services in the UK.

A chance to make your mark

Join a growing, multidisciplinary fragility fracture and perioperative service at University Hospitals Birmingham. We are recruiting one Consultant Ortho geriatrician as part of a Board-supported expansion of care for older people undergoing surgery. This is an opportunity not simply to deliver excellent clinical care, but to help shape how that care is designed, evaluated and improved.

Our service manages approximately 1,000 hip fractures each year and brings together orthopaedic surgeons, specialist nursing, therapy, resident doctors and an expanding orthogeriatric workforce. You will have the support of experienced colleagues and the opportunity to build a sustainable consultant career with clinical, improvement, teaching and academic interests.

A service with momentum

Our recent NOF quality programme reported Q1 2026 crude mortality of 5.7%, with seven of eight NHFD indicators above the national average in the reported period. We are proud of the progress while remaining focused on timely surgery, mobilisation and the experience of older people and their families.

We have developed a curriculum-mapped orthopaedic education programme, with 97% of consultants registered trainers, and are investing in the trauma nurse practitioner workforce and redesigned resident doctor rotas.
