Controller (Director Level)

About Point Foundation

Point Foundation is the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ+ and ally students, supporting 1,250 scholars in the 2026–27 academic year. Point provides scholars with financial support, leadership and career development, and a lifelong community of students, alumni, and leaders in every field and industry.

Point’s mission is to support the educational aspirations of LGBTQ+ and ally students to become impactful leaders in their lives, careers, and communities. Point is proud to be a top-rated nonprofit by watchdog groups including Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and the Better Business Bureau.

We pursue excellence in all we do and are building for scale – growing the number of scholars we serve, expanding leadership and career development opportunities, and innovating on the systems and technology that let a nimble team reach further every year.

Position Overview

Point Foundation seeks a hands-on, systems-minded Controller to run the day-to-day operations of the finance department and build the infrastructure that will carry Point through its next stage of growth. This is a builder's role for a nonprofit accountant who enjoys both doing the work and improving how it gets done. The Controller will manage expenditures and reconciliations, partner with the CFO to close each month and prepare financial reports, and keep the organization audit-ready throughout the year. Working closely with the CFO and the Program team, they will make sure scholarship funds reach Point's scholars accurately and on time. They will also lead efforts to streamline financial processes and organization-wide data, including thoughtful use of automation and AI. The role offers real room to grow, with the opportunity to develop into broader financial leadership as Point scales.

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer, Scott Arneson

Status: Full time, exempt

Supervises: One coordinator-level direct report

Location: Remote position based in the greater Los Angeles area. Occasional in-person meetings and events require candidates to be located in, or willing to relocate to, the L.A. area. Relocation assistance available.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Expenditure Management – oversee accounts payable, scholarship and grant payments, AmEx and other credit card charges, and payroll entries, ensuring every disbursement is accurate, timely, and properly documented.
  • Cash & Investment Reconciliation – reconcile cash and investment accounts on a weekly and monthly basis, including recording ACH and credit card deposits and capturing any unrecorded expenditures.
  • Month-End Close & Financial Reporting – partner with the CFO to close the books each month and prepare accurate, timely financial reports and analysis for leadership.
  • Scholarship Payment Partnership – work cross-functionally with the Program team to ensure scholarship funds are disbursed on schedule, and provide hands-on support to scholars as they navigate the payment process.
  • Audit Readiness – work with the CFO to establish and implement sound practices and documentation so the organization is fully prepared for the fiscal year-end audit, and coordinate with external auditors throughout.
  • Process Optimization & Automation – review current finance processes and lead improvements, incorporating technology, including AI, to automate repetitive work and increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Cross-Departmental Systems & Data – coordinate financial practices with other departments to support scalable growth over the next several years, and strengthen data governance so organization-wide financial data is consistent and reliable.
  • Team Supervision – supervise and develop one coordinator-level direct report, setting clear expectations and supporting their growth.

Requirements

  • Collaborate for Scale & Growth: Clarifies roles and handoffs, shares information transparently, commits to decisions once made, and designs sustainable, repeatable systems over "boutique" solutions.
