Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Power Generation Business Development

The Power Generation Business Development team is seeking a Data Center Market Development Manager. The location is flexible depending on the candidate’s profile and qualifications, with a preference for San Diego.

Position Overview

The Data Center Market Development Manager will provide comprehensive leadership and be accountable for Solar Turbines’ global market development strategy for the data center segment.

Growth in the data center industry is outpacing the ability of traditional grid infrastructure to add capacity. At the same time, data center customers are evaluating alternatives to the traditional model of grid-supplied uninterruptible power, seeking solutions that can provide comparable reliability while offering the potential for lower total emissions and greater flexibility.

These market dynamics create a significant opportunity for Solar Turbines’ products and energy solutions to bridge the gap between rapidly growing data center demand and constrained grid capacity. Applications include prime-to-standby solutions, permanent prime power, combined cycle, and combined cooling and power.

Key Responsibilities

The Data Center Market Development Manager will be responsible for advancing and executing Solar’s global data center strategy, including identifying and developing relationships with key market participants such as:

  • End users, including hyperscalers and colocation operators
  • Data center developers
  • Utilities, ESCOs, IPPs, and rental power providers
  • Data center designers, engineering consultants, and other market influencers
  • Strategic partners and suppliers

The role will lead a team focused on building direct relationships with data center customers and key decision-makers. Responsibilities will include conducting customer workshops, supporting technical and commercial project development, developing strategic partnerships, and converting market intelligence and customer engagement into qualified opportunities for the global Sales organization.

The Manager will also coordinate internal reporting and identify product, technology, and solution-development requirements necessary to strengthen Solar’s position in the data center market.

Strategic Leadership

Reporting to the Director of Business Development, the successful candidate will operate across the business unit on a global basis, applying strong business strategy, market development, and consulting capabilities.

The role will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for execution of Solar Turbines’ global data center strategy.
  • Support the global Sales organization on strategic data center opportunities.
  • Develop relationships with customers, developers, utilities, IPPs, consultants, partners, and suppliers.
  • Coordinate closely with Caterpillar Electric Power to identify opportunities for complementary solutions and market engagement.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the highest-value and most promising project opportunities.
  • Develop processes and market-development activities that position the Power Generation Sales organization for success within the data center segment.
  • Coordinate market intelligence, competitive insights, customer requirements, and product or solution development needs across the organization.
  • Provide periodic reporting to Senior Management and Executive Leadership on market development, opportunity progression, strategic initiatives, and overall program performance.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of the data center market and/or the design, marketing, application, and sale of power generation products and energy solutions.

The role requires an individual capable of operating at both strategic and project levels, developing senior external relationships while effectively coordinating cross-functional activities across Solar Turbines and Caterpillar. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong commercial judgment, technical credibility, strategic thinking, leadership skills, and the ability to translate emerging market requirements into actionable business opportunities
