Electrical & Mechanical Commissioning Engineers (L1–L5)

Mission-Critical | Hyperscale Data Centers | AI Infrastructure

Wildhorse Recruiting | Nationwide Opportunities | Field-Based / Travel Rotation

Project Locations: Texas, West Virginia, Michigan, and Georgia

Schedule: Two weeks onsite followed by one week off for candidates who prefer not to relocate. Relocation assistance is available for candidates interested in living near a project site. Project-related travel expenses are covered.

Position Overview

Wildhorse Recruiting is seeking experienced Electrical and Mechanical Commissioning Engineers to support the development and commissioning of large-scale, mission-critical data centers, including hyperscale AI and high-performance computing facilities.

These opportunities involve hands-on Level 1 through Level 5 (L1–L5) commissioning of critical electrical, mechanical, and cooling infrastructure, from initial equipment inspections and installation verification through startup, functional performance testing, and integrated systems testing (IST).

We are interested in professionals with direct commissioning experience in data centers, hyperscale facilities, or comparable mission-critical environments who understand the importance of system reliability, redundancy, safety, and operational readiness.

Candidates may specialize in electrical or mechanical commissioning. Experience across both disciplines is a plus but is not required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support L1–L5 commissioning activities, including installation verification, equipment startup, pre-functional inspections, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, and final turnover.
  • Review engineering drawings, equipment submittals, specifications, sequences of operation, commissioning plans, and testing procedures.
  • Perform equipment walkdowns and inspections to verify installation quality, system readiness, and compliance with project specifications.
  • Coordinate and witness equipment startup, manufacturer testing, acceptance testing, and functional performance testing.
  • Execute and document commissioning test procedures, identify deficiencies, troubleshoot system issues, and verify corrective actions.
  • Participate in integrated systems testing (IST), including simulated equipment failures, utility interruptions, redundancy verification, and system recovery scenarios.
  • Coordinate with construction teams, general contractors, equipment manufacturers, engineers, controls specialists, and other commissioning disciplines.
  • Maintain commissioning documentation, deficiency logs, testing reports, punch lists, and turnover records.
  • Ensure all commissioning activities follow applicable safety standards, site procedures, and project requirements.

Electrical Commissioning Experience

Candidates specializing in electrical commissioning should have hands-on experience with several of the following:

  • Low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), power distribution units (PDUs), and busway.
  • Electrical equipment startup, energization, acceptance testing, and functional performance testing.
  • Generator load bank testing, NETA testing, thermography, and power quality testing.
  • Electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS), building management systems (BMS), alarms, interlocks, and controls integration.
  • Redundant electrical distribution, source transfers, utility failure simulations, and emergency power recovery.
  • Electrical one-line diagrams, testing procedures, NFPA 70E, and safe electrical work practices.

Mechanical Commissioning Experience

Candidates specializing in mechanical commissioning should have hands-on experience with several of the following:

  • Mission-critical HVAC systems, chilled-water systems, and central cooling plants.
  • Chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, CRAH/CRAC units, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems, coolant distribution units (CDUs), and supporting cooling infrastructure.
  • Mechanical equipment startup, pre-functional testing, functional performance testing, and system balancing.
  • Building automation systems (BAS/BMS), mechanical controls, alarms, and sequences of operation.
  • Cooling system redundancy, failover testing, equipment failure simulations, and recovery sequences.
  • Integrated mechanical and electrical system testing to verify operational reliability under normal and emergency conditions.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4+ years of hands-on commissioning experience, with experience appropriate to a mid-level or senior-level engineering position.
  • Direct experience commissioning electrical or mechanical systems in data centers, hyperscale facilities, or comparable mission-critical environments.
  • Familiarity with L1–L5 commissioning processes, including equipment inspections, startup, functional testing, and integrated systems testing.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, sequences of operation, and commissioning test scripts.
  • Understanding of mission-critical infrastructure, system redundancy, equipment reliability, and operational readiness.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting, field coordination, testing documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, construction, and commissioning teams.
  • Willingness to travel to project locations and work onsite according to project requirements.

Preferred Experience

  • Direct L3–L5 commissioning experience on hyperscale, AI, high-performance computing, or other large-scale data center projects.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical electrical power distribution, mechanical cooling, or liquid-cooled data center infrastructure.
  • Experience executing or leading functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, and equipment failure simulations.
  • Familiarity with commissioning documentation platforms, deficiency tracking, and project turnover procedures.
  • Experience coordinating directly with equipment manufacturers, general contractors, commissioning authorities, and facility owners.
  • Previous experience as a Commissioning Engineer, Commissioning Lead, QA/QC Commissioning Engineer, or Mission-Critical Field Engineer.

Schedule, Travel & Relocation

These are field-based opportunities supporting active mission-critical and hyperscale data center projects across Texas, West Virginia, Michigan, and Georgia.

Candidates who prefer not to relocate may work a two-week onsite / one-week off rotation, with project-related travel expenses covered. Relocation assistance is also available for individuals interested in moving closer to a project site.

Compensation & Benefits

We offer a competitive compensation package based on experience and technical background, along with opportunities for professional growth as mission-critical and AI infrastructure projects continue to expand.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive base salary and performance-based incentives/bonuses.
  • Paid time off (PTO).
