About Trail Operations
Teck’s Trail Operations, located in the community of Trail in British Columbia, is one of the world’s largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Located in the beautiful West Kootenay region of southeastern, British Columbia, Trail offers outdoor adventure at your fingertips.
Role Overview
Teck is looking for an experienced Energy Operations & Assets Lead to join our team at Trail Operations, one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Reporting to the Energy Manager, the Energy Operations & Assets Lead is responsible for the safe, reliable, compliant, and cost-effective operation and stewardship of Trail Operations' energy assets, including hydroelectric generation facilities and transmission infrastructure, as well as the effective management of its commercial energy agreements.
This role provides leadership across energy operations, asset management, reliability, regulatory compliance, capital planning, contract management, and commercial optimization. Leadership is exercised through management plans, operating procedures, contracts, performance standards, and assurance processes rather than direct frontline supervision. The successful candidate will translate strategic direction into documented operational requirements and coordinate work performed by contractors, consultants, and service providers.
As a key operational interface with regulators, utilities, Indigenous partners, counterparties, and other external stakeholders, the Lead will help ensure secure and reliable electricity supply while optimizing asset performance and business value.
This position offers relocation assistance and a compressed workweek with alternating Fridays off. Come experience what work-life balance is all about!
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader and champion safety and environmental policies, standards, and procedures.
- Provide functional and operational leadership to counterparties, contractors, consultants, and service providers for the operation, maintenance, and optimization of hydroelectric generation facilities, transmission assets, and supporting infrastructure.
- Translate strategic direction into documented management plans, operating procedures, contractual requirements, maintenance and capital programs, and measurable performance expectations.
- Lead outage planning, reliability improvement initiatives, asset replacement programs, lifecycle planning, and risk management activities.
- Oversee multi-million-dollar annual operating and sustaining capital expenditures, ensuring effective prioritization, planning, execution, forecasting, and cost control.
- Monitor asset, operational, contractor, and commercial performance, and initiate corrective action to address performance gaps and emerging risks.
- Ensure compliance with applicable permits, licences, dam safety and reliability standards, environmental commitments, utility requirements, contractual obligations, and Teck policies.
- Support regulatory engagement, audits, inspections, investigations, and compliance reporting.
- Support the negotiation, implementation, and administration of power, transmission, interconnection, and other commercial agreements.
- Coordinate Trail Operations’ electricity requirements with generation, transmission, storage, outage planning, and market activities to support secure supply and optimize portfolio value.
- Manage operational, financial, regulatory, and commercial risks associated with energy operations and transactions.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with regulators, utilities, Indigenous partners, counterparties, contractors, consultants, and other external stakeholders.
- Represent Teck in industry associations, regulatory forums, operating committees, and technical working groups.
- Develop and maintain performance reporting systems, forecasts, dashboards, and key performance indicators.
- Champion continuous improvement, process optimization, standardization, and data-driven decision-making.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in power generation, transmission, utility operations, industrial energy systems, or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) is considered an asset; equivalent industry experience will also be considered.
- Demonstrated experience in asset management, reliability engineering, contractor management, and operational leadership.

- Strong analytical, problem solving, risk management, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and competing operational demands.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, relationship management, and communication skills.
