JOB DESCRIPTION
RUSVM seeks an outstanding board-certified or board-eligible Equine Internal Medicine specialist to provide leadership and subject-matter expertise for educational and service programs involving equine medicine. This position offers a unique opportunity for a successful candidate to join an innovative, collaborative community of passionate educators dedicated preparing students for successful careers in veterinary medicine. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, advancing veterinary education, innovation in curriculum development, and scholarly achievement are encouraged to apply.
Reporting to the Department Head of Clinical Sciences, the successful candidate will contribute to the equine medicine teaching program within a preclinical veterinary curriculum. This role requires faculty to work closely with colleagues across disciplines to deliver clinically relevant instruction in equine and/or large animal medicine across multiple courses. Engagement in preclinical laboratory instruction ranging from introductory clinical experience to surgery labs is expected.
Academic rank as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor will be commensurate with qualifications and work experience.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching Responsibilities
Faculty should expect a didactic-forward teaching load admixed with laboratory-based courses that are inclusive of both model and live-animal based labs. At minimum, faculty will participate in teaching equine medicine within several team-taught courses, including Large Animal Medicine I (Equine Medicine), Introduction to Clinics (Equine Rotation and Equine Rounds), Clinical Reasoning Skills, Essential Veterinary Skills (Equine Physical Exam, Safety Handling and Restraint, Large Animal Bandaging), North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) Preparation, and Equine Ambulatory Rotation.
Additionally, faculty must be willing to teach as a surgery or anesthesia instructor within the Surgery Laboratory II course (training will be provided), provide veterinary care and on-call services to teaching animals on rota, and participate in off-campus outreach providing medical care for privately owned equids on rotation with other large animal veterinarians. Within the scope of these activities involving clinical patients, faculty must prioritize a student-focused approach to teaching by modeling excellent patient care through meticulous, contemporaneous record keeping; clinical rounds; and structured case presentations.
Qualified candidates should also demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to participate in additional didactic courses aligned with the candidate’s area of expertise based on the needs of the program.
Service and Scholarly Activities
In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, student mentorship, and accreditation activities, helping ensure that all equine medicine-related courses meet national and international accreditation standards while supporting optimal student learning.
Faculty are encouraged to develop scholarly programs, pursue external funding opportunities, secure research contracts, publish high-quality scientific work, and participate in national and international professional organizations and committees. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and contribute to the continued advancement of veterinary education and research.
RUSVM offers access to university teaching and research animal populations, including horses and donkeys, creating unique opportunities for educational innovation and scholarly activity. Candidates with an interest in developing collaborative research programs and mentoring students in research and professional development are particularly encouraged to apply.
Whether you are an established diplomate or an early-career specialist pursuing an academic career, this position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on veterinary education while living and working within a diverse international academic community.
- A DVM or equivalent degree is required
- Completion of advanced residency training (in equine internal medicine, large animal internal medicine, or similar) is required
- Board certification by the ACVIM or ECEIM is preferred—however, board-eligible candidates will also be considered
- Preference will be given to candidates with an MSc, PhD, or equivalent post-secondary degree(s)
- The candidate must be willing to reside in St Kitts
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere is essential
RUSVM offers a highly competitive salary comparable to US veterinary colleges. St. Kitts has no local income tax, which may significantly increase your net salary. As an expatriate, you may still be responsible to report income in your home country. Additional benefits include:
- Significant relocation and repatriation package
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
- Generous annual continuous education budget
- Annual travel allowance
- Geographic living allowance to help offset cost-of-living differences
