Company:
The Boeing CompanyBoeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Space, Intelligence & Weapons Systems (SI&WS) Organization is seeking a Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) Adaptation Data Systems Engineer to support System Application Engineering activities from Huntington Beach, CA; Bath, ME; or Pascagoula, MS.
The GEDMS program, led out of Huntington Beach, CA, consists of geographically distributed team members. Locations include the east coast and shipbuilding facilities in Bath, ME as well as Pascagoula, MS. The GEDMS team is responsible for the design and sustainment of a family of ship-wide network system variants that include equipment for ruggedized switching, routing, and message/signal processing. The system is designed for use on both United States (US) Navy and foreign ships.
The candidate will be instrumental in performing and managing high-visibility tasks assigned by the US Navy customer. The primary System Application Engineering goal is to integrate shipboard user systems (Combat System, Navigation, Steering, Damage Control, Machinery Control, etc.) with the GEDMS network. This includes evolving the next generation of secure GEDMS architecture application to existing and new user systems. Efforts include requirements derivation, use cases, functional analysis, design, configuration documentation, etc. The selected candidate will also be responsible for providing Systems Engineering support for major shipboard design variants. In addition, responsibilities will include coordinating ongoing activities with internal and external team members as well as communicating with the customer.
Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including Experienced or Lead Level Engineers.
Position Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain system configuration information in databases necessary to generate Application Data files or kits (ADkits) for configuring internal networks for US and foreign Navy shipsets, strategic land-based sites, and laboratory sites.
- Coordinate with US Navy In-Service Engineering Agent and other team members to develop ADkits tool sets and databases.
- Generate ADkits and provide distance support to Field Engineers to successfully load the kit on shipboard networks.
- Generate, maintain, and perform configuration management of documentation [e.g., Interface Design Documents (IDDs)] to capture system interface design decisions.
- Perform analysis as required to recommend interface characteristics between GEDMS and shipboard user systems (models, desktop simulations, etc.) for incorporation into IDDs.
- Process Impact Statements defining impacts of adding or modifying users communicating over GEDMS.
- Participate in user system integration working groups to define system interface requirements and definitions.
- Collaborate with software developers to determine and document data formats and algorithms required by the operational user community.
This position is hybrid. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed locations. This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

- 3+ years of experience in real-time, near real-time, or embedded systems.
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
- Lead (Level 4): 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Familiarity with US Navy shipboard user systems, signal/interface type, messaging.
- Experience with US Navy shipboard network systems and knowledge of information sources (sensors, inertial navigation systems, controlled devices, control consoles) and their interfaces (the data they provide and require).
- Experience with controlled engineering process (e.g., ECPs, SCDs) and documentation (e.g., TDPs, ICDs, block/wiring diagrams) required to integrate shipboard systems.
- The ability to communicate with technical personnel from multiple skill areas and functions to evaluate technical information and issues impacting design, production, and support of products, services, or other deliverables.
- Ability to understand the big picture and the inter-relationships of all positions and activities in the system, including the impact of changes in one area on another area.
- Skills in and ability to: collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources.
- Experience evaluating customer and/or operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters, and assure compatibility of all physical, functional, and program interfaces.
- Experience developing, planning, organizing, implementing, and monitoring of requirements management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management, and technology readiness assessment processes.
- Strong technical writing skills with experience developing documentation for peer review and formal release.
- Develop documents that transform engineering and network information into clear and concise manuals, release notes, white papers, and IDDs.
