ROLE SUMMARY
The Head of Department – English will provide academic and instructional leadership for the Secondary School
English Department while teaching SS3 English Language and literature.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining high teaching standards, developing teachers,
monitoring curriculum delivery, and driving strong student outcomes, particularly in WAEC and NECO, and possibly
Cambridge examinations.
Requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
● Teach and effectively prepare SS3 students for WAEC, NECO, and other relevant examinations.
● Lead and supervise the English Department, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
● Coordinate schemes of work, lesson planning, assessments, and curriculum delivery.
● Monitor student performance and implement strategies to improve academic outcomes.
● Integrate educational technology and innovative teaching methods into classroom instruction.
● Conduct lesson observations and review students’ work, providing constructive feedback to teachers.
● Mentor and support English teachers and identify professional development needs.
● Ensure consistent standards in teaching, marking, assessment, and classroom management.
● Promote strong literacy, reading, writing, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
● Organise departmental meetings, maintain records, and provide academic reports as required.
● Support English-related competitions, debates, public speaking, reading programmes, and other enrichment
activities.
● Allocating literature novels, grammar textbooks, audio-visual aids, and departmental budgets across
classrooms.
● Work closely with school leadership to achieve departmental academic targets.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
● Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, or a related field.
● B.Ed., PGDE, PGCE, or equivalent teaching qualification including TCRN.
● Minimum 5 years’ teaching experience in a reputable secondary school.
● Strong knowledge of WAEC and NECO English requirements.
● Previous HOD, Subject Coordinator, or leadership experience is preferred.
● WAEC English examiner/marker experience is an advantage.
● British/Cambridge curriculum experience is an advantage.
● Strong communication, leadership, organisational, and classroom-management skills.
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and educational technology.
● Mature, professional, diligent, and committed to continuous learning.
