Plessey are looking for an Industrial Engineer to improve how work flows through our semiconductor fab, from wafer start to finished product.
Reporting to the Operational Excellence & Industrial Engineering (OE&IE) Manager, you will join a new team leading continuous improvement across the business. You will run the cycle time reduction programme day to day, own the fab capacity model, and use industrial engineering and Lean methods to find and remove bottlenecks, waste and variation, with a focus on improving cycle time, capacity, cost and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Run the cycle time reduction programme day to day: set baselines, analyse queue, hold and process time by module, and deliver improvement actions with module teams.
- Own and maintain the fab capacity model, keeping tool, process and loading data accurate and up to date.
- Carry out bottleneck and constraint analysis, and model the effect of product mix, loading and tool availability on capacity and cycle time.
- Map value streams to find waste, and lead kaizen events and improvement projects.
- Analyse equipment performance using OEE and equipment performance metrics, and work with Equipment Engineering to improve tool availability and uptime.
- Develop standard work, line balancing, WIP control and dispatch rules, and layout improvements.
- Define capacity and standard work requirements for new tools, processes and products.
- Investigate performance gaps shown by dashboards, form cross-functional teams, and solve problems using structured tools such as A3, 5 Whys and fishbone.
- Support capacity planning and CAPEX decisions with capacity analysis, simulation and business cases.
- Support 5S activities across the fab.
- Size and track the benefits of improvement work.
- Present at weekly fab performance reviews and monthly IE module reviews, and track actions to closure.
- Coach module and cross-functional teams in Lean and industrial engineering methods.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Degree in industrial, manufacturing or mechanical engineering, or a related subject, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong analytical skills (key requirement): able to work through large, complex data sets, find root causes and turn findings into practical improvement actions.
- Proven experience as an industrial or manufacturing engineer in a complex manufacturing environment.
- Strong experience of capacity modelling, cycle time analysis and bottleneck analysis.
- Practical experience of Lean tools, including value stream mapping, standard work, line balancing, 5S and kaizen.
- Structured problem-solving (A3, 5 Whys, fishbone, 8D) and sound statistical analysis.
- Good understanding of OEE and equipment performance metrics.
- Advanced Excel for modelling and analysis.
- Able to lead cross-functional teams and influence at all levels without direct authority.
- Able to present data and recommendations clearly to engineers and senior managers.
Advantage
- Semiconductor wafer fab experience, including SEMI E10 and fab flow concepts such as X-factor and Little's Law.
- Experience with MES data, scheduling and dispatching.
- Experience with Microsoft Power BI or Fabric.
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or above.
