Is this job info correct?

Requisition Id 16799 Overview: We are seeking an Instrument Support Electrical Engineer to support the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) neutron scattering instruments and associated infrastructure. This role performs hands-on electrical design and troubleshooting — panel layouts, wiring schematics, power distribution, and cable/equipment specification — to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of HFIR Beamline Operations (HBO) systems, consistent with the safety and regulatory standards that govern reactor facility operations. Work spans power distribution systems, electrical design for beamline instruments and conventional facilities, and experimental equipment support. This position resides in the HFIR Instrument Support Group in the HFIR Beamline Operations Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Major Duties/Responsibilities: Design and develop electrical systems — panel layouts, wiring schematics, cable assemblies, and equipment specifications. Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical cabinets, power distribution systems, circuit boards, and embedded control hardware to ensure compliant, reliable field installations. Evaluate electrical hardware and verify sizing, load ratings, and calculations against applicable codes and standards (NEC, UL). Develop and maintain technical documentation, including electrical drawings, schematics, test plans, and work instructions. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to execute work in compliance with HFIR Neutron Scattering work control, configuration management, and safety requirements. Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success. Basic Qualifications: A BS degree in electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical power distribution design, panel layout, or industrial/facility electrical systems, including field troubleshooting and installation. Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical codes, and applicable industry standards. Experience interpreting and developing electrical drawings and technical documentation. Preferred Qualifications: Experience supporting industrial, research, laboratory, or facility electrical systems. Experience supporting electrical design and construction projects. Knowledge of power distribution systems and power electronics. Experience troubleshooting electrical or electronic systems using standard laboratory or diagnostic equipment. Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar drafting/design software. Familiarity with DOE laboratory environments, nuclear facilities, or regulated technical operations. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. Special Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Benefits at ORNL: We offer competitive pay and benefits programs to attract and retain hardworking people! The laboratory offers many employee benefits, including medical and retirement plans and flexible work hours, to help you and your family live happy and healthy. Employee amenities such as on-site fitness, banking, and cafeteria facilities are also provided for convenience. Other benefits include the following: Prescription Drug Plan, Dental Plan, Vision Plan, 401(k) Retirement Plan, Contributory Pension Plan, Life Insurance, Disability Benefits, Generous Vacation and Holidays, Parental Leave, Legal Insurance with Identity Theft Protection, Employee Assistance Plan, Flexible Spending Accounts, Health Savings Accounts, Wellness Programs, Educational Assistance, and Employee Discounts. Relocation Assistance is available. If you have difficulty using the online application system or need an accommodation to apply due to a disability, please email: [email protected] This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired. We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment. ORNL is an equal opportunity employer.
