About the roleVictoria Legal Aid (VLA) is excited to offer three ongoing Lawyer positions in our Shepparton office.

Whether you're newly admitted or have experience as a lawyer, we welcome you to apply. You'll receive training and professional development while providing high-quality legal services to people who need legal help.

We Have Opportunities In Two Practice Areas

• Lawyer (Drug Court)
  
  

You'll advocate for clients in Drug Court and Drug and Alcohol Treatment Order matters. You'll provide legal advice and casework, including to people in custody and through outreach services. You'll also work with colleagues and justice partners to support clients and contribute to training, service improvement and better access to justice.

• Lawyer (Criminal & Family Violence)
  
  

You'll provide advocacy, legal advice and casework primarily in criminal law and family violence. You'll appear in the Magistrates' and Children's Courts, provide duty lawyer services, work with people in custody and deliver legal services through outreach and other community-based settings.

These roles are based at our Shepparton office on Yorta Yorta and Bangerang Country.

About YouAs Our Ideal Candidate, You Will Possess

• A genuine interest in criminal law, Drug Court and/or family violence. Newly admitted lawyers are welcome and training will be provided.
• The ability to represent clients in court, or a strong willingness to develop your advocacy skills.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain legal issues clearly and in plain English.
• The ability to build trust and communicate effectively with people who may be experiencing challenging circumstances.
• A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
• Entitled to practise in federal courts and courts exercising federal jurisdiction (entry on the High Court's Register of Practitioners) (mandatory)
