As a Lead Pharmacy Technician, a caregiver in this role will support inpatient pharmacy operations as part of a team of approximately 40 caregivers, including pharmacy technicians and interns. Caregivers are extensively cross-trained across multiple pharmacy functions and work closely with pharmacists, technicians, interns and clinical teams to support timely and accurate medication delivery to inpatient units. Responsibilities include preparing medications for distribution, retrieving medications from the carousel system, delivering medications to hospital floors and supporting IV room operations by ensuring sterile compounding technicians have the medications and supplies needed to maintain workflow.

In addition to core pharmacy technician responsibilities, the Lead Pharmacy Technician serves as a resource for peers and supports daily workflow coordination. Additional responsibilities include assisting with Pyxis optimization initiatives, supporting sterile compounding operations and helping train and develop pharmacy technicians and interns. This role helps ensure efficient pharmacy operations and uninterrupted access to medications for patients.

A caregiver in this position will rotate through various pharmacy technician positions and work every third weekend, including the full weekend. Primary shifts will be 8-hour shifts scheduled between 6:00 AM and 4:30 PM. Some second shift coverage may be required based on department needs, with occasional night shifts to support PTO coverage.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Interact with and review work of caregivers, providing feedback to ensure maximized output and efficiency.
  • Create and present quality control reports to management regarding team performance and throughput.
  • Ensure caregivers are adequately trained and oriented to the work area.
  • Provide onside re-training.
  • Serve as a technical resource.
  • Work in staff capacity and possess the ability to perform all technician functions.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) verified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National HealthCareer Association (NHA)
  • Upon hire, registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy is required within 6 months.
  • Upon hire, it is required to hold an active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
  • Caregivers with active Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician registrations are required to update their registration to a Certified Pharmacy Technician registration with the OBOP within 6 months.
  • Two years of experience as a pharmacy technician within the assigned relevant practice area.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a computer.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician Training Program
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient pharmacy setting

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physician demands include the ability to perform functions of the job while standing, reaching, stretching, and manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer functions of the job.
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs. while walking, stooping, bending and reaching; ability to transport up to 250 lbs.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
