ROLE SUMMARY
Pfizer Global Supply (PGS) is the part of Pfizer that brings approved medicines to patients. Within PGS, the Site Supply Transformation (SST) team ensures colleagues can plan and execute the flow of materials through Pfizer’s manufacturing sites, by making sure those sites have tools and processes that let them operate as efficiently and effectively as possible — tools and processes that ensure data accuracy, drive continuous improvement and use innovative approaches.
Planning and scheduling at Pfizer only works if the systems behind it are connected. A production schedule is only as good as the master data, order, capacity, labor, laboratory and material information flowing into it, and the resulting plans are only useful if they flow back into the systems where the work actually gets executed. This role exists to build and own those connections.
In this role you will design, build and own the integrations between Pfizer’s planning and scheduling tools and the systems of record that surround them. The landscape is genuinely diverse — PlanetTogether, Maestro, MES, SAP and a range of laboratory, warehouse, labor and data platform systems — and no two connections look the same. This is a hands-on engineering role: you will write the code that moves and transforms the data — SQL and stored procedures, Python, APIs and event interfaces — and you will be accountable for those interfaces running correctly in production, every day, at network scale.
It is also a design and judgment role. For each new connection there is more than one way to do it, and choosing badly is expensive to undo. You will assess the options — batch against event-driven, API against file, direct against middleware, push against pull — and decide the right pattern, which means understanding not just the data structures but what the data means to a planner or scheduler and what happens downstream when it is late, wrong or missing. Over time you will turn those decisions into reusable patterns so that each new site, tool or archetype is faster to connect than the last.
This is a senior individual contributor role at manager level. Alongside the build work, you will set the integration standards this landscape is held to, shape and sequence the integration roadmap with process and system owners, and provide technical direction to external partners and to colleagues working on connected pieces — influence through technical credibility rather than reporting lines. You will work in a small, technically strong team that builds the planning, scheduling and optimization capability for the PGS network, alongside operations research and applied intelligence colleagues whose models depend directly on the data you make available. The scope is global.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Building and owning integrations
- Design, build, test and deploy the interfaces that connect Pfizer’s planning and scheduling tools — including PlanetTogether and Maestro — with MES, SAP and the laboratory, warehouse, labor and data platform systems around them, covering both the data flowing in to generate plans and the plans flowing back out for execution.
- Write production-grade code to move and transform data: SQL and stored procedures, Python, API integrations, messaging and event interfaces, and scheduled or orchestrated pipelines.
- Own these interfaces in production: monitoring, alerting, error handling, retry and reconciliation logic, and the data quality checks that catch a bad feed before a planner does.
Choosing the right approach
- Assess the integration options for each new connection — batch or event-driven, API or file, middleware or point-to-point, real-time or scheduled — and recommend the pattern that fits the business need, the data volumes and the systems involved, making the trade-offs explicit.
- Build the business understanding needed to make those judgments well: work with process and system owners to understand what each field means to a planner or scheduler, how current it must be, and what breaks downstream when it is wrong.
- Define and document the integration standards, patterns and reusable components for the team, so that connecting the next site, tool or archetype is faster and more consistent than the last.
Data foundations and quality
- Design and implement the data models, mappings and master data maintenance processes that keep planning and scheduling data accurate through a product’s lifecycle.
- Make the data available to the operations research and applied intelligence colleagues whose optimization and AI models depend on it, at the granularity, latency and reliability those models require.
- Identify gaps in source systems and drive their remediation with the relevant system owners rather than compensating for them indefinitely in transformation logic.
Technical leadership
- Set the integration standards and engineering practices the team works to, and hold delivered work to them through design and code review.
- Shape and sequence the integration roadmap with process and system owners, sizing work realistically and making dependencies and delivery risk visible early.
- Provide technical direction to external vendors and implementation partners working on this landscape, and share practice with colleagues so integration capability across the team improves over time.
Partnership and delivery
- Partner with Digital on architecture, environments, security, validation and release management, and ensure integrations meet the documentation and change control expectations of a regulated (GxP) environment.
- Work with process owners and site colleagues to translate operational needs into integration requirements, and communicate technical constraints and options in terms a non-technical stakeholder can act on.
- Continuously improve technical capability in integration and data engineering, and evaluate emerging tooling and approaches where they would materially improve reliability, speed of delivery or cost.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Applicant must have a bachelor's degree with at least 4 years of experience; OR a master's degree with at least 2 years of experience; OR a PhD with 0+ years of experience; OR as associate's degree with 8 years of experience; OR a high school diploma (or equivalent) and 10 years of relevant experience
- Expert-level SQL, including stored procedures, complex transformation logic and query performance tuning, across relational databases; working knowledge of no-SQL stores.
- Strong programming capability in Python (or an equivalent language) applied to data engineering and integration work.
- Practical experience with multiple integration patterns and the judgment to choose between them: REST and SOAP APIs, messaging and event streaming, file-based interfaces, and batch versus near-real-time designs.
- Demonstrated experience integrating with at least one enterprise system of record — for example ERP (SAP), manufacturing execution (MES), planning or scheduling platforms, laboratory or warehouse management — including working with its data model and interface technologies.
- Experience setting technical standards and directing the work of other engineers, vendors or implementation partners as a technical lead or through matrixed influence, without relying on formal reporting authority.
- Demonstrated ownership of interfaces in production, including monitoring, error handling, reconciliation and root cause investigation of data issues.
- Ability to translate a business requirement into an integration design, and to explain technical options and trade-offs to non-technical colleagues.
- A passion for technology and its impact and presence in the industrial world.
- Ability to communicate, convince, build relationships and collaborate with a variety of colleagues.
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 or more years of hands-on experience building and supporting system integrations and data pipelines that run in production; 7 or more years desirable.
- Hands-on SAP integration experience (ECC and/or S/4HANA), including IDoc, BAPI/RFC, OData and middleware such as SAP Integration Suite, CPI or PI/PO.
- Experience integrating advanced planning and scheduling (APS) platforms — PlanetTogether, Maestro or comparable products — and manufacturing execution (MES), laboratory information management, warehouse or workforce management systems.
- Experience with cloud data platforms and modern data engineering tooling — for example Azure, Databricks, Snowflake, dbt, Airflow or equivalent.
- Experience with data modeling and warehouse or data lake design for analytical and operational consumption.
- Software engineering practices applied to data work: version control, automated testing, CI/CD and infrastructure as code.
- Experience in a regulated (GxP) environment, including computer system validation, change control and data integrity expectations.
- Supply chain or manufacturing domain knowledge, particularly planning, scheduling or materials management processes.
- Exposure to optimization, advanced analytics or machine learning workloads as a consumer of the data pipelines you build.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to perform complex data analysis and to trace and resolve data discrepancies across multiple connected systems.
- Ability to sustain attention to detail in code, data mappings and transformation logic where a single incorrect field can invalidate a production plan.
NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Required business travel (approximately 10%).
- Expected to occasionally lead and/or participate in early morning or evening meetings to accommodate different time zones.
- Ability to communicate across regions, countries and cultures.
- Occasional out-of-hours support may be required around major system releases, go-lives or cutovers.
