Build Confidence. Inspire Problem-Solvers. Make Math Meaningful.

At DSST Public Schools, we believe every student can learn, enjoy, and succeed in mathematics. We want students to do more than memorize formulas and follow procedures—we want them to understand why math works and develop the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems.

As a Math Teacher, you'll use the problem-based Illustrative Mathematics (IM) curriculum to put student thinking at the center of learning. Rather than beginning each lesson by demonstrating a procedure, you'll guide students as they explore challenging problems, develop their own strategies, and learn from one another's reasoning. Through purposeful questions and carefully facilitated discussions, you'll help students build the conceptual understanding and procedural fluency they need to succeed.

Why Teach Math at DSST?

  • Make a Meaningful Impact: Help students who may not see themselves as "math people" discover their capabilities, build confidence, and develop skills that open doors to future opportunities.
  • Teach Math Differently with IM: Move beyond traditional "I Do, We Do, You Do" instruction. Use a problem-based curriculum where students tackle meaningful problems, compare strategies, justify their reasoning, and build mathematical understanding together. Explore IM’s problem-based instructional approach.
  • Join a Team Driving Strong Math Growth: Collaborate with educators committed to improving instructional practice, learning from student work, and achieving strong academic outcomes across our schools.

What Math Courses Does DSST Offer?

DSST uses Illustrative Mathematics (IM) in grades 6–11. Teaching assignments vary by campus and position.

  • Middle School (Grades 6–8): 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Math, Integrated Algebra and Geometry I, and Grade-Level Math Intervention.
  • High School (Grades 9–12): Integrated Algebra and Geometry I and II, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, AP PreCalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, and AP Statistics.

We'll ask about your grade-level, course, and campus preferences during the interview process.

What You'll Do

  • Deliver Rigorous, Problem-Based Math Instruction: Intellectually prepare and teach approximately 3–5 classes daily using Illustrative Mathematics (grades 6–11) or other assigned curriculum, anticipating student strategies, misconceptions, and opportunities to deepen understanding.
  • Facilitate Mathematical Thinking & Discourse: Launch meaningful problems, give students space to work through challenges, and guide discussions that connect their strategies to important mathematical concepts and procedures.
  • Support Student Growth: Differentiate instruction, collaborate with colleagues, and use student work and assessment data to meet diverse learning needs, including those of students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Build a Positive Classroom Culture: Create an inclusive environment where students feel valued, take intellectual risks, and develop confidence in their mathematical abilities.
  • Collaborate & Grow Professionally: Engage in regular coaching, feedback, professional development, and collaboration to strengthen your teaching practice.
  • Contribute to Your School Community: Build relationships with students and families and support schoolwide initiatives, which may include advisory, tutoring, or student recruitment. Explore additional responsibilities.
