At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Introduction
The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). In particular, the CERN Detector Technologies (DT) team focuses on the realisation of the Pixel Outer Barrel for the ITk. Our activities include the design, prototyping and assembly of the support structures and tooling as well as the final detector integration, installation and testing.
As a mechanical engineer in the CERN-DT Team, you will join the Engineering Office Section (EP-DT-EO) and work closely with personnel from the ATLAS Group (EP-ATL) and the Technical Coordination Team of the ATLAS Experiment on the design, construction and installation of the ATLAS ITk Pixel Outer System.
Functions
- Design of precision tooling for the integration, testing and installation of the ITk Pixel Outer System Detector, comprising the Outer Barrel, Endcaps and Inner System Support Tube.
- Design and develop service installation procedures and tooling, including temporary service management solutions for testing of the ITk Pixel Detector.
- Verify the design of components and tooling according to the relevant standards and best engineering practices, performing both, analytical and numerical calculations.
- Develop, document and implement tools and procedures for integration and installation of detector components and services.
- Participate hands-on in the detector integration work in the ATLAS SR1 cleanroom as well as the preparation on surface and in the cavern for the installation.
- Prepare technical specifications for components and tools, following up their production, acceptance and installation.
- Support preparation of and participate in the ATLAS ID detector extraction.
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
Experience:
- Proven experience in the design of precision mechanical components and assembly tools for complex systems.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of CAD software for 3D modelling and management of large assemblies. Proficiency in Catia V5 would be a plus.
- Demonstrated experience in the production of 2D technical drawings according to the relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerances (e.g. ISO Geometrical Product Specifications, GPS).
- Proven hands-on experience in the construction and testing of mechanical systems.
- Demonstrated experience drafting technical specifications, assembly procedures and engineering reports.
The following experience would be an advantage:
- Assembly of sensitive equipment in a clean room environment.
- Structural joining techniques, particularly orbital welding.
Technical competencies:
- Design and analysis of mechanical structures.
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models (ISO dimensioning, tolerancing).
- Integration of mechanical systems.
- Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics.
- Knowledge and application of joining techniques, welding.
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
- Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
- Solving Problems: adopting a pragmatic approach; understanding the value of adopting generic rather than 'gold -plated' technical solutions.
Language skills:
Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
Eligibility and closing date:
