The Scope
FSC is looking for a Media Relations Manager with strong journalistic instincts, sound editorial judgement and the ability to navigate complex and nuanced topics with clarity and precision. The ideal candidate brings a keen eye for compelling stories, a strong appreciation for facts and evidence, and the judgement to approach challenging subjects thoughtfully and confidently in a global, multi-stakeholder environment. Working within FSC’s global communications function and reporting to the Media and Public Relations Programme Manager, the role contributes specialist expertise to FSC’s international media relations and positioning.
For an experienced journalist or senior media professional, this is not a conventional communications role. This is an opportunity to shape narratives at the intersection of environmental policy, global supply chains, responsible forest management, sustainability standards and corporate accountability, with a particular focus on the systems and processes that underpin FSC's credibility. It calls for someone with first-hand experience of the media landscape, who understands editorial priorities, recognises what makes a compelling story, and knows how to build credibility through informed and thoughtful media engagement.
FSC offers a platform of global relevance. The organisation operates in a space shaped by regulatory developments, corporate sustainability commitments, NGO scrutiny and public opinion. In this environment, the Media Relations Manager will play an active role in strengthening FSC's position as a trusted and authoritative voice, identifying opportunities for proactive media coverage and facilitating meaningful engagement on topics central to FSC's credibility and effectiveness.
Main Roles & Responsibilities
- Identify and pursue proactive media opportunities related to FSC’s certification system, its implementation, and credibility mechanisms.
- Develop and manage media announcements, press releases, press packs, and supporting materials in collaboration with internal teams.
- Research emerging trends, developments, and topics to identify newsworthy media opportunities.
- Create targeted media pitches, storylines, and content that communicate complex topics in a clear and engaging manner.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to uncover compelling stories and develop strong editorial angles.
- Build and maintain relationships with international, regional, and specialist media contacts.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute media engagement activities, including press briefings, interviews, and media visits.
- Prepare and brief FSC spokespeople with key messages, background information, and context for media engagements.
- Manage media relations projects from planning through implementation and follow-up, ensuring effective stakeholder coordination.
- Identify suitable formats and approaches to increase engagement and understanding of FSC’s work and initiatives.
- Monitor media coverage, industry developments, and public discussions to inform media relations strategies and activities.
- Ensure media communications are accurate, consistent, and aligned with FSC priorities, while tracking, reporting, and evaluating media engagement results.
Your profile
- University degree in Journalism, Media, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field.
- Minimum six years of professional experience in media relations, journalism, public relations, or communications, including experience managing crisis communications.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing communications and media engagement strategies.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results within deadlines.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and independent planning skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Solution-oriented and service-oriented mindset, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages to different audiences and respond quickly to media inquiries.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with journalists, stakeholders, and internal teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and presentation design tools is an advantage.
- Excellent English language skills are essential; proficiency in additional languages is considered a plus.
