Position Title: Operations Management Trainee
Business Unit: Nix Industrial / Fleet Service Partners
Location: Poseyville, IN
Reports To: Director of Talent Development
Nix Companies has been building, fixing, and serving since 1902, when our family started out repairing farm equipment in a dirt-floor shop in downtown Poseyville, Indiana. Five generations later, we're a growing industrial company with two platforms: Nix Industrial (structural steel fabrication, welding, machining, coatings, and engineering) and Fleet Service Partners. We operate across multiple locations in Indiana, with an expansion into Dallas-Fort Worth underway.
Over the past decade, we've added locations year after year through both organic growth and acquisition. That growth needs leaders, and we'd rather develop them from within than hope to find them. That's why we created this program.
The Operations Management Trainee program is a 12-month development track designed to prepare you to run an entire site or a business unit within a larger multi-department operation, with full financial and direct report responsibility.
This is not a typical training role. Graduates of the program are expected to be first in line for the next operations management opening across our growing footprint. While we can't guarantee placement within a specific timeframe, our track record of adding locations makes that opening a realistic expectation. High performers may be placed early when an immediate need arises.
What the Program Includes
- Hands-on rotations: A minimum of 6 months rotating through shop floor operations and the administrative side of the business, learning how every part of a site runs and makes money.
- Leadership development: Enrollment in our internal leadership development program.
- Executive coaching: One-on-one coaching with a professional third-party executive coach.
- Executive mentorship: A dedicated mentor from our executive team who will walk alongside you throughout the program.
- External coursework: Targeted outside training to sharpen your business and operations skills.
What You’ll Do
Management trainees will spend meaningful time in each of the following areas of the business. These will be hands-on experiences where you will learn the business from the ground up.
- Shop floor hands-on work rotations
- Estimating
- Project management
- Continuous improvement
- Field services hands-on work
- Outside sales ride-alongs
Who We Are Looking For
We hire for character first. We're looking for someone with:
- Proven leadership potential: Typically 3 to 8 years of experience, with a track record of leading people or projects and earning the trust of a team.
- Relevant background: Experience on the floor in fabrication, coatings, or manufacturing is just as valuable as formal education, if not more so. A degree or coursework in business or operations management is a plus but not required.
- Entrepreneurial spirit: You think like an owner and want to be accountable for results.
- Work ethic: You're not afraid of hard work or getting your hands dirty.
- Integrity and stability: You do what you say, and people can count on you.
- Readiness for the next step: You want full responsibility for a business, its people, and its numbers.
Relocation Requirement
The location of assignment MAY be in one of our southern Indiana locations, but it may also require relocation outside of the area. Willingness to relocate is required to apply. Upon placement, candidates commit to a minimum of two to three years at their assigned location (range pending actual assignment). A relocation package is available.
Compensation & Benefits
- Training period: $70,000 to $80,000 base salary, depending on experience.
- After placement: Operations Management & General Management roles at Nix currently range from $75,000 to $125,000 base, plus $15,000 to $30,000 in annual bonus potential, based on experience and the size of the business being led.
- Benefits: Full standard benefits for full-time team members.
- Internal candidates: compensation will be evaluated based on your current role and experience.
