Vice Chair, Clinical Operations – Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

Banner University Medical Group | Tucson, Arizona

Banner University Medical Group (BUMG), in partnership with the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, is seeking an experienced academic pathologist to serve as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Medical Director of Laboratories at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson (BUMC-T).

This 1.0 FTE leadership position provides strategic and clinical oversight of laboratory operations while maintaining an active clinical practice. The Vice Chair will work closely with the Department Chair and serve as a key physician liaison among laboratory services, medical staff, hospital leadership, and system administration.

The successful candidate will also hold a faculty appointment with the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical and strategic leadership for Anatomic and Clinical Pathology laboratory operations.
  • Serve as Laboratory Medical Director and ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, CMS, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Oversee quality assurance, proficiency testing, test validation, utilization, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with hospital and system leadership on laboratory strategy, service expansion, technology, and operational priorities.
  • Serve as a physician liaison between laboratory services, medical staff, and hospital/system leadership.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, mentorship, and development of pathology faculty and staff.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology and participate in call.
  • Participate in education, mentorship, and scholarly activities within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD, DO, or equivalent clinical doctoral degree.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Arizona.
  • Previous leadership experience in clinical laboratory operations, such as Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Section Chief, or comparable role.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory oversight, clinical care, quality, regulatory compliance, and multidisciplinary leadership.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of post-training experience, preferably in an academic medical center.
  • Board certification or eligibility in an Anatomic or Clinical Pathology subspecialty.
  • Experience working with residents
  • Experience leading CAP accreditation cycles, including as a CAP inspector or inspection team leader
  • Formal quality training—Lean, Six Sigma, or CAP/ASCP quality management certificate and/or record of running a QMS with meaningful metrics.
