Job Description
Business Overview
GE Aerospace’s Defense Engines & Services organization is the provider of choice for combat and trainer engines, rotorcraft and turboprop engines, mobility engines (tankers/transport), and marine gas turbines for the U.S. Armed Forces and its allies. Our team is responsible for design, manufacturing, and assembly of the engines on which the military depends, along with a vast array of services and support to approximately 30,000 engines in the field.
Role Overview
The Lead Engineer is responsible for leading the execution of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) on programs to meet assigned objectives within a Lean environment. This role will guide others through the full lifecycle of on-board and on-ground PHM hardware and software that captures, transmits, and processes engine data: requirements, design, implementation, test and certification. The PHM Lead Engineer will engage with internal teams, customers, suppliers, and industrial and academic partners, and will be able to impact short-term and long-term business goals.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Design, build, deliver and maintain PHM hardware and software across on-board embedded systems and ground-based platforms. Own the full lifecycle, including requirement analysis, documentation/procedures, implementation and test.
- Design and maintain hardware and software that captures and transmits data from on-wing embedded systems to other on-board systems and to the ground. Develop ground-based platforms for data processing, deployment of reasoning tools, and future growth.
- Develop PHM system requirements and understand the program's end-to-end data flow. Define, create and maintain message specifications, and develop sub-system diagnostics.
- Coordinate integration with internal teams (controls, software, systems) and with external partners, including airframers, suppliers and customers. Support system integration testing, customer testing on-site, and engine certification to DO-178C.
- Provide PHM integration support for fielded product lines and support significant upgrades.
- Prioritize PHM activities across business functions based on input from multiple stakeholders. Manage budget, resources and schedule for assigned activities. Remove roadblocks and help team members meet deadlines.
- Apply specialized PHM knowledge to influence strategy development, resource control and policy formulation for the area of responsibility.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) from an accredited university or college, ideally Engineering
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in PHM, software, controls, and/or systems engineering
- This role requires the successful candidate to maintain a US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. Citizenship. Preference will be given to candidates who currently hold US Government Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Secret U.S. government security clearance
- Working knowledge of PHM systems definition, PHM data architecture, sub-system diagnostics, and message specification, creation and usage
- Awareness of both on-board and on-ground PHM development processes, including embedded PHM software and on-board data infrastructure
- Proficiency in C for embedded software. Familiarity with MISRA-C guidelines
- Proficiency in Python and modeling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
- Experience with or exposure to engine certification using the DO-178C standard
- Familiarity with test certification and qualification processes, internal and external integration, and PHM infrastructure and operations
- Experience with Configuration Management and Change Control processes
- Previous experience in aircraft engines or aerospace, including engine testing on a rig or aircraft
- Demonstrated ability to lead process or team initiatives, programs or projects
- Established project management skills, including the ability to document, plan, market and execute programs
- Experience applying systems-thinking to prioritize PHM activities across competing stakeholder needs
- Ability to excel under pressure in fast-paced environments and adapt to new environments and changing requirements
- Desire to take independent responsibility for assigned deliverables, including breaking down problems and estimating time for development tasks
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy
