THE OPPORTUNITY The Department of Immunology Discovery at Genentech is excited to announce an opportunity for a Principal Scientist, Lab Head, to lead a research group focused on designing next-generation cell therapies to treat autoimmune diseases. The successful candidate will lead a highly productive research team, integrating efforts across cross-functional teams to identify new targets and therapeutic hypotheses, and to advance transformative therapeutics from preclinical studies into early clinical development. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of cellular immunology principles and pathways relevant to the biology of autoimmune disease, including but not limited to inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Excellent communication skills are essential to facilitate fruitful collaborations with colleagues across a diverse array of departments, including computational biology, proteomics and tissue genomics, drug development, early clinical development, and translational medicine. Key responsibilities include leading and managing a highly-productive research team, generating high-quality, original research that advances our understanding of autoimmune disease and contributing directly to the initiation and advancement of novel pipeline projects. The successful candidate may also play a critical role within cross-functional teams evaluating external business development opportunities to accelerate our cell therapy pipeline. WHO YOU ARE The ideal candidate will have: PhD and postdoctoral training in Immunology, Cell Biology or related field A minimum of 5 years post-PhD experience with a record of high-impact publications (preprints considered), patents, and/or a proven track record advancing therapeutic candidates from pipeline entry to early clinical development Demonstrated expertise in cellular immunology and a deep understanding of pathways and immune cell types that contribute to autoimmune disease Outstanding leadership and a collaborative spirit, with a proven track record of working with multidisciplinary teams Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to multidisciplinary audiences Exceptional critical thinking skills, a commitment to rigorous experimental design and creative problem-solving, and a demonstrated ability to use data-driven insights to guide scientific decisions Preferred qualifications: Expertise in both B cell and T cell biology Experience engineering, modifying, and functionally evaluating human immune cells Experience working with mouse models, including humanized models Relocation benefits are available for this job posting. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $143,200 to $265,900. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
