Product Engineer, Data Exchange & API Monetization
Location: San Francisco, CA or Toronto, ON (on-site, 5 days a week)
Visa: Sponsorship and transfers supported (H1B, TN, OPT). Relocation help available.
About the company
Our client is a fast-growing AI data infrastructure company. Its API turns any web page into clean, LLM-ready data with a single call, and AI agents and some of the best-known AI companies build on it every day. The company reached eight-figure ARR in its first year, more than doubled it in year two, and recently closed a large Series B. Its open-source project is one of the most-starred repositories on GitHub.
The team is about 40 people across SF and Toronto. Everyone owns a real piece of the product and works without layers of process. Code shipped on Monday is usually in customers' hands by Friday.
The role
The company is building the largest data library for AI. You'll own its data exchange end to end: getting data partnerships live and making them metered and billable through the API. You'll report directly to the CTO/co-founder and have a lot of autonomy. You'll write the code and also decide what gets built.
What you'll do
- Take signed data sources from nothing to live, metered access that developers can call through the API
- Build and run the metering, billing, and entitlements behind the exchange
- Ship integrations that connect outside data providers to the platform
- Talk directly with customers, find the real need behind each request, and decide what to build
- Own product strategy for the exchange, working closely with the founder
- Work with other engineering teams, since the data library touches several products
What we're looking for
- 3–8 years as a product engineer, backend engineer, or integrations engineer
- A strong product sense. You've shipped products to production that got real traction and made hard calls along the way.
- Hands-on experience shipping developer-facing or customer-facing products (not only internal tools)
- Experience owning production data or integration systems end to end, such as pipelines, third-party data feeds, or metering and billing infrastructure
- Startup experience. You're comfortable with ambiguity and speed.
- Strong TypeScript. Next.js and Node/Express are a plus.
- Interest in AI agents and automation
- Comfortable talking with customers directly
- Able to work on-site 5 days a week in SF or Toronto
Nice to have
- Production experience building usage-based billing, metering, or entitlements systems
- Background in data partnerships or API monetization
- CS degree (not required)
