ABOUT THE ROLE

For the Spring 2027 semester, this position provides instructional support for courses for the School of Medicine. The duties include, but are not limited to, the development of syllabi, course materials, assessment of student learning outcomes, as well as instructional responsibilities. University services are also expected. This position is on-site and relocation to BVI is required no later than January 4, 2027.

This Professor of Community Medicine is a full-time faculty position responsible for teaching, scholarly activity, service, and community engagement. The successful candidate will contribute to the education of medical and health sciences students through classroom instruction, community-based learning experiences, and academic advising. The faculty member will support the department's mission through research, service, and collaboration with community organizations to promote population health, disease prevention, and health equity.
Teaching and Student Development
  • Deliver high-quality instruction in Community Medicine, Public Health, Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, and related disciplines.
  • Facilitate lectures, seminars, workshops, and small-group discussions.
  • Develop and evaluate educational materials and learning activities.
  • Supervise students during community-based projects, field experiences, and clinical or public health rotations.
  • Assess student performance and provide timely feedback and academic support.
  • Advise and mentor students regarding educational and professional development.
  • Participate in curriculum development, review, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Scholarship and Research

  • Develop and maintain an active program of scholarly activity.
  • Conduct research related to population health, disease prevention, health promotion, epidemiology, health disparities, or related areas.
  • Publish scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at professional meetings.
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and community partners on research and quality improvement projects.
  • Support student scholarly activities and research endeavors.
  • Pursue opportunities for external funding and grant support as appropriate.

Community Engagement and Service

  • Participate in community outreach and service activities that support population health and wellness.
  • Collaborate with local health departments, healthcare organizations, schools, and community agencies.
  • Assist with community health assessments, health education programs, and public health initiatives.
  • Promote health equity and culturally responsive healthcare practices.

Institutional and Professional Service

  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as assigned.
  • Participate in accreditation, assessment, and program evaluation activities.
  • Attend faculty meetings and contribute to departmental strategic initiatives.
  • Maintain active membership and engagement in relevant professional organizations.
  • Participate in faculty development and continuing education activities.

Required Qualifications

  • MD, DO, MBBS, MPH, DrPH, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in Community Medicine, Public Health, Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential for effective teaching in higher education.
  • Knowledge of public health principles, population health, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish collaborative relationships with students, faculty, healthcare professionals, and community stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching medical, graduate, or health professions students.
  • Public health practice experience in a healthcare, governmental, nonprofit, or community setting.
  • Experience conducting research or scholarly activities.
  • Record of scholarly presentation and publication.
  • Experience working with diverse and underserved populations.
  • Proficiency in educational technologies and learning management systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to community-based educational and healthcare sites as needed.
  • Ability to conduct classroom presentations and community outreach activities.
  • Ability to perform standard office and academic responsibilities.

Benefits: Employees in the B.V.I. receive national health insurance through the island, are full covered by the university for international medical, dental, and life insurance, as well as emergency evacuation and liability coverage. Employees receive approximately 16 paid holidays, 21 days' vacation, and 12 sick days annually. Relocation expenses covered. Pension is available.
